Cant wait for thunder!

I like taking people more than I like hunting em myself. Grandpa turned 81 March 8. Hope to get him on one

I've already laid out my gear and tweaked my setup a bit. Our season doesn't start until the last weekend of April this year. Ive gotten a bit ahead of myself. I started turkey hunting 8 years ago at 32. I never had an interest when I was younger. Always interested in big game. I regret the decision now. It's hands down my favorite thing to hunt. Plus it's the one animal that I've truly had to learn on my own. It's been a roller coaster ride full of mistakes but it's been a blast becoming the mediocre turkey hunter I am today.

I saw my first strutters about a week ago and heard my first gobbles of the year tonight.

I'm itching to get after them!

31 days until I'm in Missouri and then Kansas. This will be year 34 in Missouri, so looking forward to getting back there.

saw a strutter OMW to work 2 weeks ago about 30yds from a very busy road with about 10 hens.
My hunting land is about 2.5 hours away, as many as 17 on a camera at one time. a few jakes mixed with the hens. looks like there might only be 2 toms in the area.

Strong chance that about 60% or more of them are going to relocate to another area as season gets closer. Winter ground vs breeding ground

Alabama season starts next Wednesday. We have quite a few toms running around on camera right now. Two strutters and a subordinate tom with 6 hens on one of our food plots yesterday. We burned around 80 acres in February so hopefully that will keep them around and bring others in.

Hoping to get some scouting done on public here in SC on Friday. Would love to be able to say I've tagged out on public this season. Almost did in 2020.

Wild 1 hour hunt for opening day in Alabama. This guy was the dominant bird and ran off a much bigger tom that came in silent behind me.

His subordinate buddy got within 5 yards of me, so had to take a suboptimal shot which ended up with my first 2 shot turkey. Thankfully minimal pellets in breasts or thighs.

Henned up big time, my light calling may have helped steer the hens toward me.

Was out opening weekend here in NC. A cousin and I were together on one half of the family land which is about 600 acres total, 300 on one side of a road, 300 on the other side, and his brother and SIL were on the other half.

We heard a gobbler way off on neighboring land for a bit then he shut up, never heard anyone else.

His brother & SIL had the exciting morning. They were setup in some hardwoods on a small creek with gobblers in neighboring fields and thick brush at the edge of the field. About 8:30 they caught the attention of 2 toms. They knew they were coming their way but hadnt spotted them yet as there is no visibility into the field from their spot. When they saw them, they were about 40yds away & the toms were coming down a slope from the field, they literally ran right to the creek 5yds away(no exaggeration, he took us to the spot...it was CLOSE) from where they were sitting. He told her to shoot, she shot but it was so close and she didnt really aim, so she only winged him. So he jumps up, finishes hers off, the other one was so stunned at everything and it all happened so fast that he hadnt run off yet and was able to get him as well. Hers was a 3yo, his a 2yo.

That was her first harvest of any animal, so thats an experience they will remember forever. Super excited for them.

Sat afternoon, his brother and I went back to where they had gotten theirs that morning, very little activity, it was in the mid-80s.

Sun AM his brother, dad, and I went back to the same area, spotted a gobbler on his roost, got setup, and he flew down and ran the opposite direction. Looking back I think we should have backed off out of sight before setting up. Then had a different gobbler in the field talking but he wouldnt commit. We did some moving along the creek, setup in one spot because they thought they heard some drumming in the field. As we were sitting there, 2 bucks nearly walked right on top of us. They got within 15 yards when one of them looked my direction and decided things didnt quite look right. They both spent nearly 5 minutes looking at us, never spooked or alarmed, but eventually turned and went back the way they came nice and easy. I imagine the conversation between them going something like:
-hey does that look right to you
-ummm not quite
-yeah something is off over there
-well what is it?
-idk, im looking but i cant quite decide whats not right
-me either
-well what do you want to do?
-idk, maybe we just go back the way we came
-yeah that sounds good
-ok, fine by me

Still looking for my first turkey. Heading there this weekend for my last chance this year.

Ill be there for Sat AM. Its supposed to rain Friday night and into Sat "Periods of rain. High 58F. Winds NNE at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 100%. Rainfall near a half an inch". So either a fairly steady rain, or heavyish rain on and off. Of course it will likely change before Sat.

Any tips or wisdom for rainy birds and chilly temps compared to the days leading up to Sat? Im expecting birds to stay on roost later than normal, unless theres a break in the rain at sun up.
