A difficult year in Bama, four birds down, smallest a little over 6” bearded two-year old I shouldn’t have killed, but went almost a month without seeing something other than hens, bearded hens and Jake’s, so I shot his behind not realizing how small he was because of my worsening eyesight.
Back to calling: first bird, only a few purrs, and clucks-this over a 2.5 hour period; second bird, small bird, a little calling up in the day; third bird, scratching in leaves, soft yelping, gobbling to him three-four times; fourth bird, two, yes two soft purrs followed by a single cluck at the end. Sat down about 2:30, waited a bit for everything to settle down, he gobbled at something, I did my soft stuff, he waited a couple minutes and gobbled again closer, I killed him at 3:07, 12 1/4” beard, 1 1/4 spurs next to the last day of the season. First turkey was the first day of the season, the other three the last week and a have of the season.
All the other calling I did netted hens, bearded hens and little Jakes. Wonderful sounding clucks, yelps, cackling, hen fighting sequences, gobbles, wing flapping fly downs, netted zip!!!!!!!!!!! I used to be able to call turkeys to the gun with my great calling. It wasn’t to be this year. This was different year. I’m getting worse, not better.
