Can you realistically fight off a 100+lb dog or are you going to lose?

Saw a video one time of a guy with his arm messed up in a cast all the way to his shoulder. He got attacked by a German Shepherd. It took hold of his good arm. It mauled him for a while. When he understood he was on his own. He flipped it over on its back and started bitting its throat with his teeth. He killed it.

My wife worked as a vet tech and she’s been bitten twice by dogs, both times were German shepherds that were brought into their clinics. The first one latched onto her bicep during an examination, it tried to bite another tech but my wife pushed her out of the way and got bit instead. That was before we met and it left 4 puncture wounds in her arm.

The second time the dog was fine for the exam and the vaccines until suddenly it snapped at the vet and then at my wife. She was able to get her head back quick enough that it barely grazed her cheek and her nose, had she been slower it probably would have taken her eye and got a fang into her temple. After that she refused to hold the animals anymore so she hasn’t been bitten since though a couple of her coworker have and they did have a pit attack a 10 week old beagle puppy in line.

Just recently they had a lady bring in “her” cat that was actually a stray, they found that out when trying to get it out of the crate it bit the lady, two of the techs and escaped to hide in the tractor supply for several weeks. The lady left it and refused to pick it up when it was finally caught.

When I worked at UPS I learned that if you tell an aggressive dog “SIT!” you can sometimes buy yourself time to get back to the truck.
Another time I was trying to claim a man’s body for the coroner’s office and had to pepper spray a large lab mix that was being protective of his deceased owner. That works really effectively and I recommend it for a number of social and legal reasons.
Dogs have been used in war and police work for a long time, and are terrifying for good reason.
Of course I think I’d win though.

Could I fight off a 100# dog... yes.. Do i want to? No. Certainly not getting out that unscathed. Once a dog breaks ~60# kicking and punching tactics likely need to change to detain/choke/crush/kill. 100#+ no thanks. 2-150# pitbulls can stretch out a 1400# cow... Hard stop

Add malinois or any other shepherd, Dutch or otherwise to the list of dogs I despise.
They're working dogs for a reason and have no place in the home of Joe Blow dog owner.

If we are saying that a 100 lb dog can potentially take down a fit human man then this hard hitting analysis should answer your question.

Fox Squirrel average weight = 1.8 pounds.
Amount of Fox Squirrels to equal 100 pounds is about 55 Fox Squirrels.

Pine Squirrels are about 9 ounces so to equal 100 lbs would take around 177 pine squirrels. No man is fighting off 177 pine squirrels. Even if you had a cattle prod like that guy in Jurassic Park I still think that's too many squirrels.

A guy with your level of submission training and high pain tolerance would prevail (and I'd bet money on that one). Not saying you would come out unscathed, but I'm confident that a trained MMA fighter who had a good ground game or jiu jitsu practitioner who weighed more than 150 pounds would prevail.

We have six or seven Great Pyrenees guard dogs for our sheep and cattle. We love them because they have such a great temperament with kids and guests. I have seen what they do to other dogs, coyotes, and table scrap bones. I wouldn’t ever want to tango with them. Small females are 60-70 pounds. Males are 100-150 pounds they can crush bones like you wouldn’t believe. A friend tried to help me corral a male that was roaming into my truck. The dog didn’t know or trust him. So he just nipped at his arm and cut him causing him to need 15 stitches. A pitbull/rottweiler/mastiff would be even more of a challenge. Also I have had to shoot some that went rogue in the sheep. They can take more lead than the average deer and keep trucking.

Yeah them taking lead can end up in a real shit show. Shoot em early and hard. Don't want them to end up screaming on a neighbor's porch.

I had a gun on my hip the whole time and the first opportunity I had to possibly use it was after it was over. If one ever attacks you ,you will be stunned how fast it happens.

Oh, I would have used the gun after.

If a 100 pound plus dog is trained or just is flat out mean and decides it wants to kill you, can a full grown man fight it off or are you potentially going to lose?

In my 20's and 30's I was over confident and had zero concern. As I grow older and like to think wiser....I now question a dog versus man fight to the death. I think I would still come out ok, but there is a thought in the back of my mind that there is a chance that it could go south.

Anybody have real experience with an attack?

Who doesn’t carry at least a pocket knife? Why don’t I get a weapon and they get teeth and claws?

Another variable is what time of year you are fighting the dog. A Carharrt jacket , jeans , and a sweatshirt would be much more protective than a tshirt and shorts.

I read somewhere that if you have to fight a dog, take off your jacket/hoodie/shirt, whatever you got, wrap the forearm of your non dominant hand and basically offer it to the dog to bite. Then, assuming it does what you wanted, get it off its feet and bring your weight down on top of it so that its back is on the ground. From there you're in a position to start gouging or doing damage to its windpipe. No idea if that works but it's probably what I would do.

A good strategy if possible.....you might if you get pet dogs sizing you up.

So many of these things are do-able if you have time...many times you don't.....like a bear charge....or the rock edge you will grab if you start to fall. Nope, it's slip and over the edge before you have time to grab anything.
