Can you realistically fight off a 100+lb dog or are you going to lose?

Just did a lil dog sitting for the oldest daughter. Her dog is a 16month old pit bull. He every bit of 110 pounds. I can say this, good thing he is friendly and a big baby. If he would get ahold of me or you. It would be all over. You would have to shoot him several times.

I would not want that dog mad at me.

when i was a kid we had a lovely fox terrier that was in love with wild boar and he was mean ... one day a great dane try to intimidate him ... it did not end well the fox terrier aimed for the balls of the great dane like he will do with male wild boars and squeezed them, the big great dane make a lovely noise and went down forever ... i can t imagine what 100lbs dog if trained ...

If no weapons are involved I would agree that the dog probably has a high probability of winning against the average adult. This is dependent on, like you said, the dog wanting it. A no fear out of control dog would be hard to handle.

I think you're right about the weapon. Something as simple as a screw driver could help the human.

With regard to the OP’s original question- depends on the breed. I have owned rescue pitbull’s my entire adult life and at this point would not consider owning any other breed unless for a specific purpose. Luckily, I have had success in training all of them I’ve had, but I have seen glimpses of their capabilities. Good luck squaring up with one in a legit primal situation and no weapon.

Former K9 handler here. As a handler you normally train in groups, which means you take turns in the bite suit, or with a hidden sleave, or muzzle work. I've caught 65lb mallies, 80lb dutchies and 100lb GSDs. They're all hideous in their own way. I don't think most people realize how fatiguing fighting with a dog can be. I mean a real fight where he's pulling you down with all he's got. Unless that dog is wearing a collar and you know how to use it to your advantage, that dog's gonna win if he wants it.

This thread just reminded me of a story from about 7 years ago when a few friends and I were on a fishing trip in Wyoming. While at that old train depot hotel in Medicine Bow we literally overheard the meth head bartender tell these exact words to some crusty old bar flies;

"I don't care if a dog is 300 pounds I'll snap his neck and throw him in the trash."

We quoted that all weekend while fishing since it was the dumbest thing we have ever heard.

Had a 110# Rotweiller. Dude was a teddy bear. Don't think there was a mean bone in his body!
BUT....I did see him go "primal" a couple of times!
No way would I have taken him on!

Real life for me!!

Almost a year ago, I walked into a business ( work related) and the owners Great Dane attacked me. 160 pounds. He locked onto my arm . I started kicking the dog. He locked onto my leg and I started punching the dog in the face. He was biting my hand.

It’s was fight or flight.

In the end I had numerous bites to my arm, leg, hand. And a broken rib.

Still doing physical therapy to try and gain strength back in my arm.

He may have not been lying though. You ever tried to fight or wrestle a meth/crackhead?? I’ve unfortunately had the pleasure of that and some of them have freaking super human powers

Best bet to fight off a 100 pound dog with no weapons, be a black belt in BJJ or take a hit of crack right before the attack.

I've seen a couple dog fights go down and what always amazes me is the speed it can happen. Turns into a literal blur where you can't tell which dog is where.
