Can anyone give me a head's up on Boise?

I’m a Californian who is very much considering the move to Idaho. Although looking more in the Pocatello area than Boise. Plan to bank enough cash here in CA to buy a place outright there. Kind of disheartening to hear about the direction Idaho is heading.
Most of the growth issues are in the treasure valley. The rest of the state is kind of just motoring along.

The valley is growing at an astonishing rate. While I much prefer the Boise of 20 years ago, I still haven't found a place I'd rather live.

It is sickening to me. I absolutely HATE how much it has grown but I am in the same boat...no where else I would rather live. Although with the murder yesterday in Meridian (about a mile away from me) and the idiot in Nampa that was arrested for terrorism...I am really contemplating getting the hell out of the Treasure Valley. I don't think the news has done even a half way decent job at covering the rise in crime over the last 2 years...let alone the last 15-20. About all they want to cover is 'how great it is' and the housing crisis...

Is there a city in the west that isn't being flooded with CA folk? Seems like Boise, Bozeman, SLC all have it.

If you find one, let me know! HAHA. I bag on the CA folks but in all honesty, the ones moving here...for the most part...are like minded to most Idaho folks and want to get the hell of the $hit hole that is CA for a better life. My gripe with them is that they come here with all this money that they've made off the expensive housing in CA and offer more than asking price just to get in and that pushes locals right out of the market and drives the price of home ownership up. Then the ones that come later end up paying more because sellers know they can get more. I can't fault the sellers for trying to get everything they can...and I really can't fault those that move here with money...but it does suck for the locals.

If you go go anywhere other than the valley you'll be fine. I grew up in Pocatello, and while it has grown, it's not not too noticable. The outdoor life right outside of town is great, but the winters are worse than Boise. Also, not much is open at night or on Sundays.

You're absolutely right. Can't fault what they're doing, just wish the growth was happening elsewhere.
I have a huge number of clients that retired early by selling their house in California and bought a similar place here for 1/3rd the cost.

That’s what I was hoping to hear. It’ll be a few years still but it seems I can buy a nice little house on a few acres in Pocatello for less than half of what a house would go for here in the city. California is just getting crazy expensive and I’m over the political climate here.

You won't have any problem finding more than reasonable real estate in Pocatello, especially coming from Cali.

An incident like that close to home is always concerning but the crime is minimal at best especially in Meridian. With all the growth in Meridian the crime rate should be through the roof but it is not. I do agree that the housing crisis is a little ridiculous when you look at all the available new/used homes for sale.

The invasion of Boise and making it way too busy and crowded really sucks. Lived in Boise almost all of my life. Bring back Boise of 1990s. But yeah leave CA and add to it.

Note: I don't blame anyone personally.

I also recently had a job opportunity come up in Boise that I am considering. I am curious how bad the air inversions are in the Valley. Although I don't have any issues with asthma, I do have a young family that I'm thinking about.

For the OP. Check real estate listings around there and then add $10,000 to $40,000 to them. My wife sold her house in Kuna(Baja Meridian) in one day and had 4 offers $10,000 over the asking price. That was a year ago. The competition for houses is insane. They even write letters now about why they really want your house that come with the offer.

They can get rough. Usually we will get a protracted one in the winter and then some in the summer. The summer ones are worse because of fires elsewhere and the smoke. The winter ones make it bloody cold as they block out the sun.

But the smell from the Nampa sugar factory makes it all worthwhile (insert sarcastic emoji).

The smell in Kuna is worse. We live south of the sugar factory so we generally avoid the smell. Thankfully.

I moved to Boise four years ago because of a lady, and to try to fulfill a boyhood dream of being a trapper. Prior to the move, I was living in adjacent Montana and the only parts of Idaho I had ever seen or spent any amount of time in were Salmon, Challis, and the Frank Church.

When I moved to Boise, sight unseen, I thought it would be a slightly larger version of Salmon. Boy howdy, I was a young, dumb, and in love idiot. I remember rolling into town late at night with my truck full of everything I owned, summitting the hill past Horseshoe Bend, and seeing a metropolis worth of lights in the valley below for the first time.

It is an incredibly nice place to live, and I love being on the interface of desert and mountains. That said, rent has gone up 40% in the four years we have lived here, and I'm afraid to buy a house because I'm afraid the housing market is a bubble given the runaway growth. Our plan is to save until we get priced out of the valley, then move back to Fairbanks where we both have jobs available. Every time I'm stuck in traffic on the way to Eagle the long subarctic winters sound less and less bad.

I agree with silverbullet555's post. The winter inversion severity varies year to year. Late summer air quality seems to get worse each year from wildfire smoke.

Man, Eagle road sucks lol. I avoid that if I can when I'm in town for work if at all possible.

Just spent a week in Boise. I can't believe how much it has grown, but it still seems like a great place. Alaska to Boise? Hmmmmmmmmm
