I just received a job offer to relocate from the SLC area to Boise. Has anyone here made a similar move? One of the few things I like about SLC is that there are a lot of job options here while still being able to get to a trailhead within 20 minutes of my house. I really hate having to start from scratch to find hunting areas again, but it seems like a really good job opportunity.

There's tons of trailheads within 20min of Boise too... and they're all packed like on the Wasatch. Except the ones in Boise are packed with Californians that have all moved to Boise. You'll have a lot of company if you decide to hunt close to Boise.

Lived there or in the vicinity for 20 years....there is nothing now within 20 minutes of Boise but more Boise....two hours is about the minimum drive to be in really cherry country....but it is CHERRY

I think I'm asking for a definition. Is this some west coast slang? You guys have some weird ones. Haha.
West coast surfer slang/ Hawaiian pidgin.....means "very nice"....:p

....BTW, I think the same thing every time I hear someone say "y'all"....always makes me want to bust out my Foghorn Leghorn impression....

2 hours minimum to get to anything decent that isn't completely packed with people. I've even found it takes a 2 hour drive to get to decent family camping spots that actually provide some privacy.

Not to dick up the man's thread, but I was snow goose hunting with some fellas from Bozeman, MT a few weeks back. We had a good flock come in and after all the shooting was done one of the fellas looked over at me and said, "That just got juicy"... I still don't know what he meant but I guess it was a good thing.

Yall is universally understood though, has been around for a long time and is sort of a signature of the south. You tell me "cherry" and "juicy" have been around longer than a year and I wouldn't believe it.

Just poking fun anyhow, its always fun to see what others use to describe certain things. Can't say I'm gonna steal that one from you though.

Anyways, never been to Boise OP. Sorry. It looks and sounds crowded though, probably better than SLC though.

My brother moved out there a year ago from NC we grew up in Sodak and he loves it out there . He lives in star and is about 10 minutes from some blm where he hikes around and calls coyotes. When i was out there we watched a coyote eating a cat while a guy raked his leaves. Cat in distress works good he said. Like me and him were talking i think crowded is a relative term. Pheasant season here brings 140000 people here so he does not feel crowded at all. I have hunted north of there for elk 3 years in a row and i was expecting to see alot more people but saw maybe 20 or so for the 3 years. I will never leave Sodak but if i was Idaho would be top of the list.

My dad was saying cherry back in the 70's

It's a pretty short drive. Just get a room and check it out yourself. Or, just take the job. It's not like job offers grow on trees.

Nothing wrong with juicy cherry.......ok ok I'm done....

(P.S. check out Highlands Hollow if you make it to the C.O.T. - best brew food and peeps around....)

Thanks for the info guys. I've been to the city a few times and like it. My biggest hang up is leaving my long time hunting buddies and going back to solo hunting. Also paranoid about the job being a circus a regretting relocating my family.

2 hours isn't really that bad to get to some good areas. On the otherside, if anyone knows someone hiring for aa mid-level Accounting/Finance, I'm your guy!

Boise is a nice place. You'd be within a reasonable drive in any direction to solid hunting opportunities. Go for it. I can relate your situation as I just moved cross country from ID. Think of it as an opportunity to explore new country.

I really hate being this way but the last thing this area needs is more people...but seeing as you are from SLC and a member of Rokslide, you are welcome to come! ;) We need to offset all these GD Californians that are coming here haha!

In all seriousness though, I have spent most of my life here and it is changing more and more with each day that passes. I saw a statistic that said there are 40 people a day on average moving here and I believe that number is accurate. I've seen the value of my home rise over 35% in just two years. I only bring that up because if you are looking to move here, you should be aware that home supply is very, very low.

The hunting used to be superb around Boise but with the population explosion, it is getting harder and harder to get away from the crowds. Unit 39 had over 13,000 hunters last year for rifle deer season. Elk had 3,500. But there are still good places to hunt...you'll just have to make the drive as others have already pointed out.

All in all, it is a good place to live even with all of the changes but it is slowly becoming like every other major city. Good luck!
