Camping alarm system?

I'm going to do some solo hunts this year and was thinking a motion sensor alarm system would be an interesting gadget to have around the tent at night. I've seen a few on Amazon, has anyone used on before or have any recommendations?

We get quite a few mountain lions in our area. And while I'm not too worried about it, I've had a black bear rub against my tent. Just to note, no food was near my campground had it about 100 yards away

That's a possibility. I'd plan trying it out a few times before the season opens. But the thought crossed my mind I'd be getting woken up every 30 minutes by some critter. Just a curiosity really.

You won't get any sleep as every bunny and mouse will set it off.

You just need to come to peace with the fact you may not be the top predator. Once you embrace this the experience is much better than worrying.

It'd suck being woke up with every whitetail, black bear, elk, coyote, fox, ringtail, skunk, mule deer, coati, cottontail, jackrabbit, raccoon, mountain lion, smuggler, cow, etc that walks through camp at night.

Most of our fears are irrational so just hunt harder so you sleep harder.

That has been my experience too when I once arranged a rudimentary perimeter alarm with pots and pans
Yep, I was about to say the same thing. 550 cord and something noisy to tie to a trip line. Soda can and BBs or something like that.

Cost under $5, never runs out of batteries. Can’t fog up or freeze a sensor. Tie it just high enough that rabbits or other small critters won’t set it off.

I agree, I wouldn’t worry about it though.

It would suck.

I have a Packalarm Pro, it has a little tripwire and a super loud alarm that goes off. I use it in grizzly country in Northern BC. Personally I would be fine putting in earplugs to sleep without the alarm, but my fiancé sleeps way better having the alarm set up. Before we had it she would wake me up often at any small sound, now she sleeps through the night and if she does wake up to rustling it doesn’t bother her. We’ve used it for 20+ nights and it’s never been triggered by an animal…if it does I’m sure I’ll have a heart attack - not because I’m scared of the animal, just because the alarm is SO loud.

What would you do if the alarm went off? Be scared? Im failing to see the point. A bear fence will axctually stop a bear from coming into your camp.

Probably worth a try, OP. I use a driveway alarm for hogs down at our fish camp and it doesn't alarm on coons, guess it has sort of a height requirement. It does alarm for most of the pigs but every now and then I'll see one out there that didn't alarm. It won't trip on birds or mice or anything, it's on a pig pipe so lots of activity there.

Think about the reaction time vs a predator's action time.

You hear the sound, process, react, adapt (lighting motion) and can now become effective.

If facing a truly unruly foe, you were attacked some where around the react portion.

Rip a perimeter with spiderwire and terminate it at your tent. When your tent gets rattled you'll know you were in the presence of critters.

In the morning when you get up to dump that piss missle and trip on the line....you'll be glad you are only throwing a half ounce on the fire and not some expensive chingadera from Amazon.

Tim Treadwell was the last person attacked in a tent that I can recall and he was smack in the middle of Katmai and had pissed off almost every bear in the park. Don't be Tim and you won't be Tim.

Pig Pipe?
It's a 10' long piece of 6" PVC with a couple holes drilled into it and filled with corn and chained to a swivel on the ground on one side. It's fun to have behind camp because they'll beat it to death all night long trickling out a kernel at a time here or there. Birds will sit on it and pick out kernels from the holes but with only a couple holes a flock of 40 grackles have to sit in line and take turns. Coons will smell the corn and try to get after it but they're not strong enough to roll the pipe unless it's close to empty. Point being there's a good bit of critters that visit it, but the driveway alarm only sounds with deer, hogs, and cattle so if used in OP's scenario it shouldn't hit on mice and such.
