Caliber Selection... Again

Man, there are so many good cartridges for what you want it's hard to pick wrong.

You're liable to learn a lot in this thread, I have been reading through these caliber choice threads and so far I have learned my rifle leaves me:

Over gunned
Under gunned
Using the wrong bullets
Cartridge is too long which requires a an
Action 1/4" too long which makes the
Rifle too heavy and
Rifle too long

In 25 years deer, elk, antelope, goat, pigs, moose and coyotes have not noticed it's wrong so I keep using it. I have been flirting with a more powerful rifle and a less powerful rifle and love them too. More testing is required before I pick just one, say another 30 years and I'll be able to render my decision but for now the one I'll grab first is a 280.

I hope that it only takes you another 30 years to get it right.

.280 is a great caliber.

My next rifle will be a Remington Model Seven SS 7-08. I've got a Model Seven SS, but it's in 7 SAUM.

There's a lot of options out there that will fit your wants and desires. Good luck and post up what you decide on.

You mentioned a Ruger American Predator in 6.5 creedmoor. A friend of mine has one and I was completely impressed with the accuracy of it, especially since its a sub $500 gun. Kick seemed to be about like a .243. Another fairly inexpensive one I've shot is the Savage lightweight hunter. Its lighter than the American and a little shorter. I really didn't notice a difference in kick between the two although I'm sure the Savage must have a little more because of its weight. I wasn't shooting groups with the Savage but it seemed to be accurate also. I liked the Savage so much I ordered one for a knock around/truck/horse gun.

That it's not a seven mag! I shot a seven mag for years and loved it, still do but like the OP, I wanted a lighter Rifle that wasn't such a mule kicker in a lightweight gun.

Then the 6.5 guys, tell me I picked up a ballistic turd by going to a 270. (.006 difference)
But hey that's why I like these caliber threads.

It isn't so much the diameter difference, you just don't have longer bullet lengths available in the .277series. They start to destabilize and tumble and go subsonic sooner than the higher BC bullets in 6.5 (.264) and 7mm (.284) do

Really? Berger hunting .277 170 grain has a g7 bc of .339 which is better than any of their 6.5's and comes close to the .284 180 gr with a g7 of .345

You forgetting about the .284 195? That 277 doesn't come close to that, and very very few 270 rifles have the mag box length to shoot those 170s loaded long

Muzzle breaks are awesome get that 300 wsm ;) I have a tikka t3 lite in 300 wsm was a handfull before the break but not bad now.
Hearing loss is awesome!
I have a Tikka 300WSM and 7-08.
400yds is a bit long for elk but the 7-08 is a fine cartridge and even better if you roll your own.
You can shoot 120s for deer and get 2900fps out of the 140s.
I'm looking for some lite 300WSM recipes.

Hearing loss is a myth. If it was really going, wouldn't it stand to reason that the ringing in yer ears should get progressively quieter as well??
But it don't...

That's sound logic right there

In all seriousness, does anyone hunt with a suppressor, and if so what rifle do you like. It looks like Kimber's new line are coming with threaded barrels, do that will be a sweet option.

Also, I will ask a dumb question about the 6.5 creedmore...what are your thoughts about the staying power of the round? As in 5 years from now do you see the bullet selection drying up (unless you reload), like so many other popular calibers over the years.

The last two bucks I shot didnt complain and where I shoot under 600 yds, the subsonic isn't a concern. Reading the OP, he says medium ranges so 270 still a good match.

So another question spurring off my original. If I did go with a mid range gun for now it would likely have an effective accuracy range of 500 at most with factory components. If nothing is ever shot past 400 will you even notice a difference between the 6.5 and 7-08? Seems like most everything I'm encountering on the 6.5 is that it really turns on at much longer distances, but at what point does it gain the upper hand?

Thanks everyone for the responses!

Chris I thought on the test thread we did with Tim last year that he said there would or could be the same problem with the 7mm 195s with length? And I maxed out at 168 gr in my ultralight 7Rem WBY not due to length but recoil. That 195 scared my wimpy little shoulder.

Guess my point was that the 7mm is great but the 270wsm was a good trade off for what the OP asked. I still think 7Rem is king but for lightweight no brakes backcountry rifle, they punish shoulders and brows.

Robby, just seems like it's easier to find 7mm build with extended mag lengths than it is on the 270 platform. Especially the basic 270 Win platform, not the WSM per se. Just because they make a bullet for it does it in any way mean it's a good idea to shoot it . I think we all need for some snow to melt so we can get outside and start hitting the hills.

I love my t3 lite in .270 win!

I think the most important thing to remember is that whichever one you pick for your wife automatically means that the rest of us using that setup are now carrying a woman's gun! By purchasing the rifle, you also take on the responsibility of constantly reminding all of them that they are in fact carrying a "woman's gun" per rules of the interwebz.

Whoops. That didn't work. Let me try again
