Caliber Selection... Again

Yeah, this is another caliber selection thread!

I've always been a big archery guy but in the last year I've become increasingly interested in rifle hunting again. I currently have a somewhat custom Ruger 7RM that shoots better than I can but the gun is very heavy at 11lbs loaded. I would like to get into a lighter gun for backpacking while still maintaining some good accuracy for medium distances. Here's where it will get tricky, I would also like for my wife to pack the gun when we hunt together so I'm looking for a lighter caliber in recoil terms, and something more maneuverable for her.

My main criteria's are as follows:
Lightweight (subjective but I'd like to keep it around 8# or under)
Lighter recoil
600 yards max on deer
400ish on Elk (If I'm expecting longer shots I have my 7RM)
Factory ammo options available
Short action

I've always been a .284 fan so I've looked into the 7-08 as I would still be able to load it heavy in the case she draws moose. Another round really catching my eye is the 6.5CM as well. Preferably, I'd probably go with a 300WSM for myself but as stated earlier, I want this to be a gun my wife can handle too. Out of either gun I'd probably go with a 130-140grain load. I'm entertaining the idea of Ruger Predator in 6.5 as a cheaper gun for her for now and if I like the round I can buy something higher end later on. Thoughts?

The gun that I will most likely be purchasing next is either a Kimber Montana in 6.5 or Christensen Arms new Mesa in 6.5. I wont be hunting elk with it but I wanted basically all your other qualifications. Although Tikka may be coming out with a 6.5 as well.

I have wanted a 6.5 for awhile just to do something different, and most I have talked to have been very happy with it. There will be guys to come along that are much much more knowledgeable though.

7mm-08. Easy to find ammo, light recoil, kills everything you point it at. 280AI...you're a fan of the .284 stuff anyways. Do your seriously think you'll only get one gun? Lol

I shoot either 120s or 140s out of my 7-08. You won't really realize a huge BC gain with the 6.5 til you start stretching it out. 400 yards and under I wouldn't think twice about the 7-08.

Kimber Adirondack in either caliber you mentioned with a scope will be under 6lbs...just a thought

Kind of what I'm leaning towards. Probably won't got the 280AI route though as it's so similar to my 7 Rem. Thanks bud!

I love these threads. Been waiting for another one to pop up ha ha.
Everybody hates it when I say this but 270 WSM! Fits the bill for what you're looking for. Only downside I found is they feed a little rough

Robby....what have been the issues people brought up with the 270wsm? That is my current deer rifle, never had an issue, but I have not tried it on an elk or anything else. Have you had success with it on game like elk?

That it's not a seven mag! I shot a seven mag for years and loved it, still do but like the OP, I wanted a lighter Rifle that wasn't such a mule kicker in a lightweight gun.

Then the 6.5 guys, tell me I picked up a ballistic turd by going to a 270. (.006 difference)
But hey that's why I like these caliber threads.

I love the 7mm08. Have one in a Kimber Montana that is just about perfect for everything that you have described. Ammo is actually more readily available over the counter than it used to be too.

(I also have a .284 custom that I really like too!)

I like the effect that a 140 grain Hornady SST out of my .270 WSM has on deer.

Oh yea a 270 is .277. Forgot about that Luke so 264 is awesome and 284 is awesome but I get crap for being in between was what I meant.

OP, you might even throw 270 Win. on your list

.308 Win

I like the M70 and have a 12-yo Featherweight I really like and am planning on an Extreme Weather model build in the near future.

Anyone who's anybody knows that a 6.5 hipster is absofreakinglutely more better than a 270 WSM. There's like just no comparison dude...
