Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced [$500 or so] hog hunt in CA? I'd prefer to go unguided and do not want to sit at a feeder as I've heard some outfits have their hunters do. I contacted Tejon Ranch and it sounds like they will no longer be conducting the wild pig management hunt and have hunted the Cooley Ranch in Sonoma county and don't care to go back there. Thanks for the help,
Brian

Tejon still does the group semi guided hunts I beleive... The management hunts a circus anyways I wouldn't waste my time or money then. The group semi guided is a better deal imo.

What does semi guided mean? I've been on two of the management hunts and although I thought they allowed too many people on each hunt I never had a problem finding hogs or getting away from people.

The Tejon Semi Guided is a good deal. Last time I was there, 10 of us in a ranch house, guide did all the cooking and if you needed help with finding pigs the guide would help you.

Tejon semi guided deal is the best hog hunt option in the State IMO. Get 8-12 of your buds and have at it. Anyone who is not blind, crippled, or excessively drunk can kill one with a rifle in a weekend. Of course a bow hunt is more challenge, but still very doable. It's not uncommon for groups of good bowhunters to go 75% or better. The population is down some from drought and increased (on purpose) hunting pressure, but there are still plenty to chase and with some rain finally, numbers should rebound.

Thanks fellas. I'd love to hunt Tejon. I've been putting it off for a while. Getting 10 guys together will be tough though. I'll look into it some more

Contact Bridges Sportsmens center in Paso Robles (805) 239-4867, www.bridgesportsmen.com, the local gun shop for the area and ask which local guides they recommend. You can usually find a weekend hunt (although it might be over fri.nite!) for $500 without lodging, plenty of motels in Paso, King City and ranch's loaded with pigs. I will add the pigs taste better at the end of summer after they've been raiding the grain fields for months!

I doubt that. Every group I know of has no problem. Turning guys away is more commonly the issue. Put a post up here and you'll likely get enough takers.

I used to use Frank Morasci out of King City and always had a great time. He's more rifle friendly though. Most of the bow hunts end up with dogs and a bay scenario. Which is actually really exciting. I'm sure if you let him know up front that you want spot and stalk only that could be arranged too. Might be worth a little research to see if Frank is still at it.

People need to understand that hunting hogs on public land in CA is not like hunting other game in other states. What I mean by that is a good Hunter can likely go to a new place and because he knows his game and knows how to glass, look for proper habitat, etc, he can likely find animals. In CA, there just aren't many hogs on public land ever, period. There may be some hidey hole exceptions to this, but nobody is gonna give away their secret. Hogs are too smart and resourceful. They know where the good groceries and reliable water sources are, that means private land where crops are grown. So I don't mean to discourage you, but if you actually want a chance at a hog, rather than just a hiking trip, you are going to have to secure private access, and that generally means paying for a guide.

Lake Sonoma might be your best bet if you are dead set on DIY, but someone else is going to have to comment on that as I have no experience there.

SDHNTR pretty well explained it. I'm not aware of any hogs on public land around Whiskeytown. I think you best hope is to find a private land, trespass fee type of hunt and if you can find one its probably around Red Bluff, about 45 to an hour from Whiskeytown. Google search hog hunting Red Bluff/Redding and you might find something and if you don't search Dye Creek Preserve. I doubt if Dye Creek lets you go without a guide but I don't know and they may be able to steer you in the right direction. Lake Sonoma is a long way from Whiskeytown. Good luck!

The other guys are pretty spot on. I live in Redding and while there are a few pigs on public land actually finding them is a tough chore. Shoot me a pm and I'll try to help out with anything I can.

Just back from a hunt east of Redding. Private land, spot and stalk. Cost was about twice what you were looking at. My nephew and other brother took nice boars.
