Buy once cry once 2p tent?

I'd go with a Hilleberg Niak. Its listed as a two person tent but it works great as a solo tent. You can keep all your gear covered and can pitch it anywhere. I found teepee tents to require more real estate and can be tricky on slopped terrain. I've been stuck in blizzards above tree line as well as bug infested areas and it has never failed me.

There is no such thing as buy once cry once for a tent…. Different tools for different jobs.

Floorless and stoves are cool for cold weather when sized appropriately, but for September in the mountains I think most guys would be better off with a standard backpack style tent with a mesh or partially mesh inner. That or a bivy/tarp setup.

Off the top of my head want to say a pound I could be wrong though. But I guess the extra breathability and options is what I like most. Sorry if I’m not a ton of help like I say I’m pretty new to the tent type of hunting

Xmid 2 is pretty fantastic. I love the Slingfin portal as well, but I have the 3 person version for the wife and I.

As age .. caught up with me, for packing in I went with a Zpacks ultralight tent. But I suggest you size up, so for just you, get a 2 man, for 2 get a 3 man. People typically use tracking poles to set them up, but you can but carbonfiber poles specifically for their tents. If you go with any tent like theirs, I suggest staying away from the single pole tents

I prefer to have room in a tent. But I have a beat up body, and simply do better going ultralight.
I've been running my Zpacks triplex for 9 years and I love it

No pressure but I have a spare Seekoutside Cimmaron I am trying to get rid of.

I bought a dyneema version so won’t need the regular one any

Message me on a price. You don’t mind having floor less shelter at all?

I have a Tarptent double rainbow that I like a lot for the purpose you described. Smaller footprint, double doors and vestibules, sets up fast and easy. Even with the liner added it is light and packs small.
Thanks!

I used a Durston X-Dome 2 on my elk hunt last year. Great tent with lots of space. I also have the X-Mid, but wanted more headroom in case I was stuck in the tent due to adverse weather.

Probably need more info to give a good recommendation….depending on state/elevation/use case you could be fine or it could be snowing already.

I’m a big fan of using a SO Cimarron throughout the year, I use it solo and with another person frequently. Having an inner nest is great for me and I have the option to use a stove if gear needs to dry out or weather is unpredictable (almost always is). Although it’s bigger than your desired 2P, they have smaller options that would fit the same nest and might fit your hunt.

Replying to the OP... This is the correct question/answer. Without knowing what kind of hunt and where, it's almost impossible to recommend a shelter. Backpacking in vs base camp is the first thing you need to figure out do decide what shelter will work the best.

I own a standard tarptent rainbow (1person), cimmaron, and redcliff. For sept, the rainbow is the best shelter for me due to smaller footprint and floor for comfort. I can camp in the smallest flat spots. Cimmaron requires massive site.

Something to note on the single rainbow vs the double is that you can sleep two people in the single in a pinch. My GF and I actually share it often without issue. We are both relatively small tho. As a solo shelter I find it plenty roomy with room for some gear. Weight with stakes and carbon pole is 34OZ. Wonderful tent in my opinion.

Another ultra light option that compares well is the big Agnes fly creek, but it’s spendy. The tarptent is exceptional for sub $300 but would not be my top choice for regular high winds and regular heavy rain. The fly creek does better in those conditions due to double wall design.

Just know that these are UL options and don’t have the durability and weather resistance of something a bit heavier
