Building my elk rifle

I shoot 165 accubonds out of a .30-06 and have shot 5 elk with the 165 accubond.
If you put the bullet through the vitals, you shouldn't have any issues

If you like the 7mag you will like a 280AI shooting 160 ABs.

Another vote for a 280ai or smaller. 6.5prc, hot rod 25, or even a 6 creed would fit the needs and I'd bet you would shoot it much better too.

.300 win is an amazing caliber with a lot of bullet options. As long as you put on a good brake there will be virtually no recoil on any of your options. Just make sure you use ear protection!

I have seen a pile of elk killed with a 300 prc, most are bang flop!

So after turning 55 I’ve decided to build me a lighter rifle the gun I’m replacing is a heavy 7mm shooting 154 inter bond so I thought I’d build a 300 win mag shooting 165 accubonds thinking I’d get performance similar or maybe better then the 7mm my max yardage is 500yds sad thing is I’ve killed truck loads of elk/ deer with my 7mm guess it’s time to retire it what’s your thoughts on shooting the 165 accubonds for elk

I would look at some of the lighter offerings that come out in the last several years. Kimberly, Savage, Christianson Arms and Fierce all have very light guns. A short action will be lighter, but you can stay with the long of you have to.

Calibers to consider are the 6.5 CM but I prefer the PRC. 7 PRC, 280 standard and the AI. 500 yards and in, there are a ton more choices. Those that I've mentioned are the only ones I have experience with.

id consider something you could send some rounds down range with regularly, a light rifle can be a learning curve to get steady.
