Building my elk rifle

I shoot 165 accubonds out of a .30-06 and have shot 5 elk with the 165 accubond.
If you put the bullet through the vitals, you shouldn't have any issues

Another vote for a 280ai or smaller. 6.5prc, hot rod 25, or even a 6 creed would fit the needs and I'd bet you would shoot it much better too.

So after turning 55 I’ve decided to build me a lighter rifle the gun I’m replacing is a heavy 7mm shooting 154 inter bond so I thought I’d build a 300 win mag shooting 165 accubonds thinking I’d get performance similar or maybe better then the 7mm my max yardage is 500yds sad thing is I’ve killed truck loads of elk/ deer with my 7mm guess it’s time to retire it what’s your thoughts on shooting the 165 accubonds for elk

I would look at some of the lighter offerings that come out in the last several years. Kimberly, Savage, Christianson Arms and Fierce all have very light guns. A short action will be lighter, but you can stay with the long of you have to.

Calibers to consider are the 6.5 CM but I prefer the PRC. 7 PRC, 280 standard and the AI. 500 yards and in, there are a ton more choices. Those that I've mentioned are the only ones I have experience with.

I’m turning 50 and rewarding myself with a 6 lb 300 prc recoil seems to be the grinch who stole Christmas for slot of folks here lol. I still hunt with a 75 lb Mathews sure I could kill stuff with 60 lb bows and a 243 but why not kill em deadier and have a margin of error when it’s not perfect?

Stick with 7mm. Maybe get a lighter one with a break. That is what I have a like it a lot. Just haven’t killed an elk with it…. Yet.

I'm with the others stick with 7mm but back him down to the 7mm-08 less recoil while not sacrificing a ton of power.

500 yards and in….Zero reason to go magnum. Anything from 243-308 is fine. A lighter rifle should be in a lighter recoiling cartridge. Then suppress it to reduce recoil further, while protecting your hearing and spooking game less.

A compact, lightweight suppressed 6.5 or 6mm CM (or the 25CM when more ammo is available) is the answer, with 6.5cm being the easy button due to ubiquitous ammo availability.

This rifle (16” 6.5cm Tikka) is 7.5lbs as pictured, shoots 10 shot sub moa, has recoil low enough my 10 year old can shoot decently… and it will kill any ungulate at 500 no problem:

Amen!

300 WM on a lighter platform seems like a step in wrong direction to me. If 165gr bullet is what you want than a 7mm variant is the obvious pick. 280 AI, 7 SAUM, if you want something weird you could try one of Sherman's 40 different variants of the SAUM case.

Pick up a 6.5 creedmoor. I’ve killed plenty out to 500 yards. I wouldn’t go beyond that but good shot placement will put them down. Super light rifle and easy to find ammo for it.

If you are going to build a gun, hard to beat the prc line for elk. My recommendation is 7prc or 300prc. Given your concerns, is recoil something to think about? If so, 7prc all day.
