I was in the Rifle area Friday. Had a smaller 5x5 I glassed up. He was not at all interested in my calling. He was just feeding and occasionally rubbing around on a bush. I finally got him to give me a half ass weak bugle. He wouldn’t even raise his head for a cow call. I watched him for 40-45 minutes just before dark. The amount of people out this year is absolutely mind blowing. In one particular area, from Friday evening to Saturday morning, 8 camps popped up in small area. I let them have it.

Well for what it’s worth, my daughter and I heard a couple bugles in PA last weekend.

Couldn’t wipe the grin off my face to see her face light up when she heard them. Pretty awesome

You were up in my neck of the woods then. Elk an hour away with 0.00000001% chance of drawing a tag, so I gotta drive 2/3 of the way across the country.

I think most people are more worried about the big fire going on in that area right now as numerous homes have been lost...

Length of daylight is what triggers the rut, not cold weather

yep, but cold weather makes them more active. They were bedded down an hour before sunrise at the beginning of season. Rough and frustrating when you have 30 minutes to get it done!

I know about the fire and the rain over the labor day weekend that helped to stop some of the fire and all of the men and women that are working their tails off to fight it. I also understand that there are still fires going on elsewhere other than MT with a lot of damage. However, I can't control what I can't control. Just curious about if anyone is hearing any bugling.

No it was a Challenging situation on Sept 2nd. It was a Full Moon so he was early to bedding, we caught him there & Challenged him in his domain, he didn't like it! (grin) It took all of 90 seconds to suck him in! Thanks!
