That’s a heck of a first day out for Steelhead on the fly! If you’re looking for the next level fly fishing that’ll reach those pockets, you should look at Spey fishing. Nice fish, roosiebull!

The rod I bought was an 11’ 8wt switch rod, so kind of a hybrid single/double hand rod. For me, it was still pretty limited on big water, but I’m probably a pretty basic fly caster… I can manage my line fine, but just reaching that little green pocket on the far side of the tailout was often difficult… slow to cover water… the things I didn’t like are probably the same thing that others do like… the satisfaction of reaching that little hard to reach pocket rewarded by a biter… I want to get a couple good casts through every spot one could be and move on with my life… part of that, when I’m hiking river, I fish fast on my way and will beat it up a little more on my way back… evolving with the ever growing crowds most likely 😉

A perfect day of steelhead fishing always starts with not being around anyone else, and I have to be fairly deliberate to make that happen, I think that’s a big part of the fly rod not clicking with me.

Mississippi sheepshead, my wife and I took a break and had a ball...
