If I could move anywhere out west...
Probably looking like 1969 in the Kamchatca area. I'd probably miss...Nothing.

Hunted Kamchatka this past August and had this discussion with the outfitter. A rifle hunt for Snow Sheep and also saw bears everywhere; but as a bowhunter who’d heard the news that Russia was about to open to bowhunters I asked about it. According to the outfitter it will likely be a few years before bowhunting is normalized in Russia - weapons permits, customs and internal police checks, hunting regulations and implementation guidance, hunting licenses required to bowhunt, authorized Bowhunting equipment and restriction, not to mention absolutely no current outfitter familiarization with what it takes to put on a successful bowhunt.

Looking forward to drawing my bow in the Russian Far East but know going in that it’ll be a while.

Great point. The guides won’t magically become skilled bow hunters overnight.

I had read somewhere that Dr. Ashby had been a big part of getting things pushed through there so if that's true hopefully that takes care of the equipment side of things...and doesn't include some 350gr broadhead, 32% FOC minimums

Or two or three....its Russia after all.......

Looks like you're right, can add a second bar for $5000...starting at over $17,000usd after additional expenses plus tip though if they don't allow DIY hunts that won't be on the table any time soon for me. Good to know in case I hit the lotto though!

I worked in Russia for over three years in the early 90's. I bow hunted wild boar and bear and was not an issue then. Of course dealing with Russians over half the trips were cancelled etc. It used to be fairly reasonable

Partially true, there is a group of guys working within the 'Ashby Foundation' that pulled this off...including Ashby of course.

Yeah, sad really. I've talked to a couple guys that have been to Russia hunting. There was no such thing as Game Management...and if there was, the greedy Outfitters would look the other way for $$$$$. Money talks. You could literally pile the bears up if you had enough dough with you.

In fact, thats the reason that Kamchatka peninsula was closed for awhile....it was the Wild West for outfitters raping and pillaging- at least from what I heard-anecdotal, so take it for what its worth. Russia was trying to initiate some sort of a management system there as thats what they were proposing....I dunno the latest.

Wow!!! 😳 This certainly wasn’t my experience when hunting in Russia. Had a wonderful time and although I was sheep hunting we saw bears every single day, usually multiple times per day, including several trophy boars (the one pictured is a whopper). There was also bear scat and tracks everywhere - even saw some dens. Also saw bears on the helicopter trips both on the trip to base camp and return. I‘ve been to Alaska multiple times but from what I saw the bear density of Kamchatka is much higher.

Outfitters - I know quality Russian outfitters that offer a much better deal on a high quality bear hunt than the one posted in his thread. Sure, Russia has its share of unscrupulous outfitters who over harvest or don’t honor deals but I’m sure that never happens in Alaska, right? It always pays to do some research and go with outfitters with solid references.

One of the people responsible for this is Sergey Bershentsev, he is Russia's representative at the EBF, (European Bowhunters federation) It has took a lot of effort on his part and rest assured there will be best practice in place.

Maybe drop him a line, He is not fluent in English but I'm sure you will work something out.
