Blaser R8 Field Evaluation

I like the stock, it makes me tempted to buy another R8.

Do you know what your rifle weights without the scope?
I can weigh tonight. Compared to the previous professional, the forend is slimmer, the grip more vertical and shorter trigger reach, and obviously adjustable comb.

Professional 2.0 stock, Akila barrel extension with pic rail, 6BR ACE semi weight barrel, OG6-s.
Does the Pro 2.0 Stock , come with a trigger? Or is that a separate purchase?

I have an Ultimate success and am trying to plan out what I need to buy once the Pro 2.0 stock shows up in Canada.

It came with a trigger. Plastic guard and housing vs metal on my professional.

Can you change the guard and housing to metal? I know plastic should work since it goes in car engines, but just curious. Thx.
Half the time the metal trigger guard from my professional is in the 2.0 just because changing the trigger group is easier/faster than changing the magazine insert. So yeah, if you already have a metal one, super easy. I wouldn’t go out and source a metal one just to have a metal one though.

Found my first and real only experienced issue with the R8 today after dropping in my 375H&H barrel. I normally ride my thumb in line with the bore and apply downward pressure with the base to help with sight picture during recoil. This does place my thumb right below and behind the R8 decocker/safety. Never had an issue before until today. But a few times, I’d got to fire my second timed shot and get a click. Turns out the gun was docked.

Here is what I believe is happening. With the 375 recoil, I believe that my thumb is/was hitting the decocker as the gun recoiled. Because of where I’m placing it and how I’m applying pressure, this makes the most sense. I was able to simulate it too and confirm that this would be possible. It would also be possible to decock the gun inadvertently through recoil, still cycle it due to thumb pressure, and then get the click becuase it was still decocked.

Once I figured this out and switched to wrapping my thumb more along the side, no issues. Seems very much a specific circumstantial and technique issue that only would appear with larger rifles. FWIW, the 375 R8 today weighs 9.5lbs with 4 in the gun, and I was shooting 300gr.

This is the first time that I’ve ever had a “problem” with the R8 that is specific to the design location of controls. Nothing else does what the R8 can do for travel, caliber conversion, decocking safety, and sealed from weather when the action is closed, so I view having to change techniques for this gun as more of a minor inconvenience. While frustrating, just throwing this out there if anyone else has experienced this.

I ended up taking a chance on a #2 lilja barrel that was in stock on the website. I had it cut to 16.5 inches and it shoots awesome. It’s also an extremely “fast” barrel. I’m getting roughly the same velocity from it as I get with 18 inch barrels.

There’s a lot of trash talk online about lilja barrels. I have zero complaints. 10/10, would recommend.

Chambered in 6 BRN.

The number 2 contour is near as makes no difference to a standard weight Blaser barrel. The whole package is light and very handy. I was smacking “vital sized”rocks at 1,000 yards no problem with it today.

What magazine are you using for the BR case? How well does it feed?

I’m using the .308 mag.

I have a 22-250 mag as well.

My 6 BR mag is currently with Form and is what is being used for the testing currently.

Pros and cons:

1. The 6 BR mag works the best. It’s essentially flawless. It seems to have adequate COAL for everything I have shot through it (103-108 grain bullets).

2. I was recommending the 22-250 mag over the .308 mag until I started using the pic rail attachment. With the pic rail, the 22-250 mag ejects roughly 1/5 of the spent cases at an angle that bounces off the pic rail and back into the bolt. With the saddle mount, it works just fine. Much like the 6 BR mag.

3. The .308 works great…..except that you have to take some care in loading that first cartridge. It has a long way to go and if you’re half ass-ing it, the cartridge can nose dive and gum things up.

Once the first round is in, I haven’t had any trouble with the subsequent rounds. I have tested it from relatively mild chambering to full on mag dumping…once you get that first one in, it’s fine and it ejects the cases at the right angle.

You can make all three work just fine.

I was wondering because I was thinking about doing a 22 BR or 22 dasher and running light bullets. sounds to me like 22-250 mag would work best if i did that. I would want to use the regular mounting setup and not the pic rail.
