Black eyes

I would encourage you guys to write their sponsors and voice your displeasure. That's really the only way it will affect them.

I can't respect anyone who can't own up to doing something wrong. Be a man. Take your lumps and learn from it. Move on and do it RIGHT the next time. This blame everyone else and not taking responsibility for you actions is just complete BS.

Seriously, the only reason I'm following this now is to watch them crash and burn. Everyone needs to remember these turds names when they go to startup their next outdoor pillaging venture..If they owned up to their bullshit id be over it by now but the lack of ownership is out of hand IMO

Doesn't seem to have much of an effect on some others in the outdoor industry. The only one I can think of is Jeff Foiles.

Sad but true, I also think only reason it ruined him is he was convicted of a felony, so he literally could not hunt anymore.

They probably asked spook spann for advice on how to handle the situation.

It's really disappointing. I like the films they put out. That said, it is the greatest sin in hunting to disrespect the game animals. When you put profits over ethics, and responsibility, you lose my business. Also, man the F-up! You made a mistake, own up to it.

What I know about flyfishing and filming could fit in the same thimble.

I've watched and shared some videos these guys put out. It's a shame that they not only disrespected a fish that is in trouble as a species with their actions, but that they didn't own up to it. Trusting others with information like what is legal to harvest where is just plain stupid.

Sadly (re: the film permit) relying on govt agency employees to know all the rules of their employer just isn't sound. I see it all the time in helping people with Social Security strategies.

Bull trout aren't even that fun or difficult to catch.

Dumbass's got off easy keeping their fishing and hunting licenses.

I did get a chuckle over the "hundreds of hours of investigating" comment. Sitting around watching videos for hundred of hours sounds pretty tough :).

I wouldn't say they got off easy, 49 state and federal citations seems a bit excessive. I have read about poachers here in utah, people legitimately guilty of poaching big game get off easier then that. As far as keeping their fishing and hunting license I see nothing in what they did to warrant taking them away. Yes, punish them for what they did but I think Montana and the USFS threw the book at them.

Can someone enlighten me as to how they are poachers... Is it because they may have killed a bull trout due to their over handling of the fish? Doesn't seem like there is any evidence that they actually killed any fish.

Poaching isn't just killing somthing. You can be a poacher jut by doing something illegally. They poached bull trout by illegally fishing for them whether they killed them or not. Just like being a poacher while hunting. For example say someone went elk hunting out of season but didn't harvest one they still are a poacher because they illegally hunted

From the Missoulian:
"An FWP news release announcing the plea agreement last week indicated bull trout had been mishandled by the Boughton brothers and Von Ruden during the trip, including an instance where one of the fish was caught, reeled in, netted, handled, and then released with the hook and line still attached so they could film it under water being reeled in, netted and handled again.

Some bull trout were over-handled by the three men for periods of 12 minutes or more, Sommers had charged, and FWP Region 1 fisheries manager Mark Deleray said what the men did with the fish after catching and before releasing them “will no doubt have negative impacts on the bull trout fishery.”

“We believe some of our practices could have been handled better during this trip with what we now know,” the Boughtons wrote, “but we believe FWP misrepresented this part of their case in their press release about our handling practices. Never was a fish out of water for more than a few breaths and then back into the net quickly. We feel strongly that we had no negative effects on the fishery and we never intentionally released a fish to replay it for the camera. That practice would violate the fish-handling ethos we hold dear.”

“They can deny it all they want,” Sommers said Monday. “I have the videos.”

Sommers said the men were not charged for any instance where video evidence showed a bull trout was released within four minutes of being netted.

But there were times that unedited video – FWP obtained via a search warrant for more than 2,200 videos shot by the Boughtons during the Bob Marshall trip – showed the three “messing with the fish for 15, even 20 minutes,” Sommers said. “There were some they’d release, that would just go right to the bottom and lay there.”

Don't get me wrong Im not advocating for these guys one bit but I don't think there was any proof they actually killed any fish. If there was they would have seen harsher penalties. A big fish like that lays on the bottom in deep pools anyways... Does it not? Fwp never stated that they killed any fish.

I have read all of the press releases! I simply want to know why people think they are poachers. If your calling them a poacher please explain why....

Here's a scenario: A guy is shooting at animals in a unit where he doesn't have a valid tag. He maybe hits one but there's no proof that he actually killed it. Is he a poacher by your definition?
