Hey guys/gals I’m looking for some information on Bighorn sheep hunting in the unlimited draw for Montana. I understand it’s some rugged country but I don’t know which unit to try or where to hike to to find sheep. Spotted one up by mystic lake last year and it started to peak my interest. Any advice on where to start would be appreciated. If anyone has harvested one in these areas I’d love to talk to you.

Thanks

I know at least 1 of the guys on this forum has direct experience sheep hunting in the MT Unlimited units. We’ll see if he comments. He’s also knocked down a Dall and knows the level of effort required in this area.

You’ll earn anything you get in there.

I went to high school in Deer Lodge and knew folks that had tried every year. I couldn't tell you where, but the goal is to be sitting on sheep when the season opens.

This was pre-mobile phone times and the hunt was over within 2 or 3 days.

In the age of sattelite phones, it is probably over by noon on the first day.

Do a search. There's been several threads on this over the years with good information.

I saw a few threads from quite a few years back just didn’t know if anyone in here has killed one or has good insight on that area of more recent.

I'll save you some time-- no one is giving up information on the unlimiteds.

There was once a beautiful thread of a successful trip with photos and everything but the member got none stop pms asking for details of the hunt he deleted all the posts.

My advice is just pick a spot and do some scouting. People get lucky and fill the quota every year.

2 posts and both are on this thread. Probably a troll

If you are actually serious, then this is extremely poor form, and you are not worthy of such an accomplishment. Go in and figure it out yourself. Anyone who knows where to go learned it by burning their own boot leather and probably several years of failure. You are both insulting them and disrespecting the time and energy they put into learning it.

No need for the hostility. As a hunter who has killed every big game animal with a bow in the lower 48 only missing a sheep, I thought reaching out to fellow hunters was a good first step. If people feel comfortable in sharing which units they like or areas to avoid, that only advantageous to everyone on here. No need for hate.

These posts crack me up. Honest answer is that hard work and luck are required - I don’t believe there are any secrets to the UL hunts. Things I recommend - keep a clean camp, there are more grizzlies than sheep (my opinion), the higher areas tend to be pretty dry (ridges/peaks etc) so if you plan on spending time up real high make sure you are packing water up there. Lastly, be prepared to not see any sheep, at all. Glass until your eyes are hurting and then glass some more. Rinse/repeat until you get lucky or the quota is filled.

This comment is 100% inaccurate in regards to the hunts currently.

I think one of the 300 units closes the same day it opens most years, from what I understand the terrain is more forgiving in that unit as well.

Thank you! Do you like glassing up cliffs or being high looking down?

Why the heck do people think that someone will just share knowledge that probably took years to figure out. In this age of satellite imagery and info do your e scouting and just go and see what you find. 90% of the fun of hunting is just trying to figure out a area. If you want to skip that part and all the hard work than hire a outfitter

I'm not sure what part about it is hard to understand, especially for someone who has killed every big game animal in the lower 48.

You're aware of the massive demand and miniscule supply of sheep tags right? And that this is the one opportunity to hunt them OTC in the lower 48? How do you figure making hard earned intel freely available as advantageous for maintaining this opportunity?

People share knowledge about lots of hunt locations. People get all butthurt when somebody asks about the unlimited though. Theres shitloads of information out there if you just know where to look.

Have any of you 3 hunted the Unlimited?

Simple yes or no.
I swear, next time I see somebody mouth off to somebody else for asking about the unlimited, I'm just going to divuldge every single bit of info I know right out in public. I've never understood how seemingly happy people can turn into such arrogant (i'll skip the name calling) because somebody asks about that place. If you don't want to share information, don't. No need for insults, you aren't better than somebody else because they asked for information.
