I'm definitely no expert. But I look at the base size mostly at this point. I saw a big buck two weeks ago and his antler growth was at about ear width. Maybe 7in above head. But the mass and base size was what impressed me most. Also the body size compared to the other two younger bucks. Im not sure how he will end up but it was easily a shooter in my book.

So in on this.

I found five bucks today but honestly they all looked similar. About ear height with just the beginning of a split on top. One of them was significantly bigger and had a split ear which tells me he is big enough to really brawl.

This is in an area with excellent food and water.

It's absurd to think you could judge a buck as anything more than mature at this point. You might get some idea of how his frame will lay out. The name of the game is tine length and until they have those your not getting a good picture of it's score.

This buck will be decent, but probably not a 200" deer. Ok, I'd bet good money he won't be 200, but still nice to see bucks putting on growth this time of summer.

Always interesting to see how different bucks grow out differently in different parts of the country.

Here in Co most bucks seem grow out real late compared to many of the pics I see from other areas. I was out a couple days ago and best way to tell more mature animals is still body size.

Saw a bunch a bulls with a couple bigger bulls both were grown out to their 4ths already. Way ahead of where deer are at this point.

A 200” whitetail or mule deer will have substantial growth right now and usually when you see them in late may or June you know they will be big. Biggest whitetail I ever killed was gross right at 200” may 17th was the first day I laid eyes on him he was a 6x5 already biggest buck I’d seen in may to this day. The trend tho is I’ve killed some 150-170 bucks that I’ve got to watch and all of them you knew in may that they were going to be really good bucks. I have experience with one giant Muley that was 200 ish and same thing lots of growth early in June and knew he was going to be a giant.

While a bit early to tell what they'll, have you can judge the mass at the bases now but velvet makes everything look bigger.

I’ll call BS in thinking it’s absurd. I’ve watched hundreds of deer develop. A 190 plus buck just doesn’t all the sudden explode in July. It starts early and grows continually. End of July they are all but done and the hardening process begins

Tell me more about this gardening process that big bucks are involved in
