When you gain access to the property because the LO sells a unit wide tag is it open like an HMA in WY would be? Or more like an RFW property in CO where you have to have an escort?

I don’t really understand BHA’s stance on this one. I looked but can’t find the number on NM’s site. How many tags did LO’s sell last year?

If you purchase a UW landowner tag then you can also hunt that ranch if its in the unit you are hunting. However you are likely to have a better hunt on public land. Remember, we are talking limited tags here. Its not like CO or ID in regards to pressure.

The lottery numbers would go up a little, and i just don't think you should be able to buy your way to the front of the line, that's basically my point. Please explain BHA profiting and gaining membership, etc from the tags they're trying to abolish. I appreciate the discussion.

BHA grew with the help of members Rinella and Randy among others. They sit on the board and have been the biggest influencers and advocates for western hunting.

BHA and the Meateater brand go hand in hand. Both have gained profit through membership to each respective business by promoting western hunting.

Phelps, BRO, Gohunt, Randy, Jay Scott, Meateater, Hushin all have made many episodes using these LO tags to produce content to build brands including themselves and promoting BHA.

The number of applications have increased every year because of this at an insane pace. The LO tags have skyrocketed especially in Units where they film. I have experienced this first hand.

It is undeniable that Randy, Steve, etc have drummed up membership for BHA from telling these stories while hunting on LO tags.

So tell me why is ok for everyone except the Landowner allowed to make money off these ?

And how don’t they feel responsible for the current prices/situation when they are directly involved in using them to promote themselves?

Thats nearly 200 tons at todays prices. Which basically means he has ~5000 elk eating hay every day for almost 4 months.
Maybe he just rounds up to the n

I'm just trying to understand your perspective, not saying landowners shouldn't be able to profit from folks hunting their land. Again, I don't agree with landowners being able to sell tags. That's only my opinion. All those folks are definitely increasing interest in public land hunting, it's definitely driven me to hunt public land. Maybe it's not unreasonable to take advantage of a system that is flawed while trying to improve or change it?

Really appreciate the conversation.

I guess I don’t see the LO tags as being a pertinent issue. And obviously I take advantage of them since the tag I like to hunt has went from a 60% draw to sub 6% in 5/6 years. Mostly because it ended up being in a hunting video. It’s tough to watch a group I once joined a decade ago that preached hunter recruitment change that tenant slowly as all these people showed up to experience what they advertised.

From their recent heavy involvement in Wyoming’s draw and now this it feels like we non residents got used. Invited to a great party where we had to bring our own booze but the second we started to talk to their ladies we are getting the boot.

You think BHA changed their tune on hunter recruitment? Tell me your thoughts on BHA and the Wyoming draw. I'm not well researched on their involvement. Thanks

Getting sleepy so I will keep it brief.

Buzz, chair of Wyoming BHA was instrumental in getting the draw to go to 90/10 for residents just recently from 80/20. For some species it took the chances of a NR that has been buying points for 15+ years and effectively ended any reasonable hope they would ever draw a tag that they have been paying for points for without any plan moving forward to offer any alternative. It was hotly debated here on multiple threads that always went sideways.

Under the guise that other states use 90/10 it was sold as reasonable. Even though it wasn’t apples to apples with considering Wyoming’s guide law for Wilderness. Also noted that NRs pay a substantial portion of the wildlife budget in that state and are slowly getting opportunity lessened.

Edit: I carried an extra 0. 500, not 5000
What they don't eat they trample, most years it's all 4th cutting and 50% on the third, more on bad years.

Plus you don't exactly want elk shit in your hay bales.

Then it's fences, haystack etc..

We're seeing close to 300 a ton in some areas now.

Poor guy, that must suck having a ton of ground that's teeming with elk and only being able to break even with guiding hunters. If I was him I'd sell that ground and move to town.
Jealous, maybe you need to buy some land and start ranching.

Where do you get the LO tag and how much? My opinion is that the tags for the animal (natural resource) should all be the same price and equally available to everyone. But not the access to private land.
Ok so you get the tag but all the lands are private, where do you hunt or do you poach?

This is why we should sell all public lands, then you can either decide you if you want to invest in lands for a hobby or not.

A little more on my perspective.....my mother in law works for an outfitter in NM. If I had a pile of cash I could go hunt elk, but I don't so my options are to hope and pray I draw a tag with low odds. It doesn't seem right to me that wealthy people have better access to a publicly owned, natural resource.
So your cool with anyone hanging out in your backyard?

This thread is all over the place. One things for certain, hunters are at each other’s throats now more than ever.

Tell that to my great grandfather lol. Let’s be real, no one short of a tech dork idiot is buying a ranch to start ranching in 2022. All these lucky kids taking over the family ranch their grandparents bought for a penny/acre are straight lucky and should never complain. Yes, I’m jealous!

I don’t know many can sell an inherited house in CA and buy a ranch out west. Just don’t be shocked if they aren’t hunter friendly.

I was asking the reverse perspective. My understanding is by selling that UW tag the LO opens his/her land to hunters who may have acquired a tag in the draw. I was curious what the quality of their access is.

My options would be to get permission from a land owner or not hunt.

Haven't seen any mention of the landowners that use tag revenues for conservation, like habitat work. Many of the ranches serve as source populations for elk that ultimately end up on public land. Eplus isn't perfect but it is working well.
