My buddy loses 50k annually to elk in hay. That doesn't count broken fences, stack raids, etc..

Does your buddy let people hunt elk? Is the alleged damage happening during hunting season?

I'm not trying to be argumentative, just trying to understand different perspectives. I live in Iowa, everyone has the same chance at the same tags for the same price. Obviously there aren't any elk here, but we have a bunch of whitetail deer, turkeys, pheasants, etc. There isn't much public land. When farmers have a lot of crop damage they usually let people hunt. If the deer population is excessive, the DNR will issue a bunch of extra doe tags. Seems like a win-win situation. There are programs that promote wildlife habitat and conservation for private landowners. If landowners want to make money they can lease their land to whoever they want. Using crop damage to justify selling bull elk tags for thousands of dollars doesn't make sense to me.

Starts in July and ends in February.

They eat anywhere between 1 and 1.5 hay cuttings and then start rading stacks once the snow flies.

He owns it and outfits it. You can kill a couple a day for months coming in and out of the fields..

Elk are probably the number one agricultural damage complaint in the west.

It may just be me, but if I was losing 50k annually to elk, I would be letting everyone and their brother with a tag hunt my land to ease my financial loss.

Are you against public land?
Im against leftists, liberals, socialists and communists, antifa, blm, PETA, HSUS, NWF, NMWF, USFW, Greenpeace, and BHA to name a few. Not into terrorists organizations.

I am for free market economy aka capitalism. I am for private land owners rights, i am for hunting opportunity which Eplus affords me, and i am for freedom! Where do you fit in?

So BHA spends over a decade recruiting new hunters out west. Applications are up over 300000 in NM in just 5 years. Non residents get 6% of the tags. Draw odds are total shit.

And they seriously want to do away with the LO tag ? Yet their own board members and affiliates hunt off them every year to produce content to drive up hunter numbers and new BHA members. How many LO tags has Randy, Rinella, Phelps, etc bought over the years to make content. So it's ok for them to profit and build their businesses off it for the past decade but not the Land Owner ?

I was asking about your stance on public land, you didn't answer... I like libraries, fire departments, public schools, public roads, tax payer funded snow plows so I can go to work, social security, our military, teachers, the EPA, railroads, public transportation, environmental regulations, laws, electrical cooperatives, public swimming pools, tax payer funded boat ramps and parks, public hunting areas, labor unions, fairly elected governments, etc. If that makes me a communist, then okay.

He's not, different state..

I just laid it out as example of damage..

I know an eplus rancher that has 1500 elk year round that lower his carrying capacity for cows and they hammer his alfalfa as well..

Does he let people hunt? If I had a tag and knocked on his door and politely asked permission, would he let me?

So the argument could be made that he's making more money off of the elk being on his land, eating his crop, than he is losing correct?
Probably a wash by the time you count expenses..

That being said guys who don't profit from them, murder them on an industrial scale when the problem gets to bad.

Thing is most ranchers don't want anyone on their ground more than I want random people in my back yard..

Poor guy, that must suck having a ton of ground that's teeming with elk and only being able to break even with guiding hunters. If I was him I'd sell that ground and move to town.

I dont see any possible way it could be a wash. 48 hunters with lets say an average of $2k cost to hunt private land guided. (Intentionally low for arguments sake). That's $96k gross. So you're saying he has $46k in expenses?

It sounds to me like ranchers need to make the decision to allow people to hunt their land, whether that be for an affordable trespass fee or for free, or they can deal with elk on their land.

It's almost as if they think that everyone should be able to hunt public land

By preventing people another outlet to hunt public land ?

Every LO tag I have hunted has been on public, DIY. Why lose another option.
Where do you get the LO tag and how much? My opinion is that the tags for the animal (natural resource) should all be the same price and equally available to everyone. But not the access to private land.

I see it as a certain number of elk should be harvested each year to promote healthy population, prevent excessive crop damage, etc. Isn't putting a percentage of those tags in private hands reducing the number of tags available to anyone and everyone, or am I wrong?

The number of tags is factored with the LO tags in consideration also. It’s not in addition to....The herd in NM is healthy.

And yes some tags would go back into the pool. But at 6% of tags for NR. 10% for the guided draw. 84% for residents. It doesn’t do much to move the needle when apps are up 80000 a year.

It’s a nice option if you strike out in the draw. And while yes there are extreme examples of prices getting stupid. And they most definitely have gone crazy since every influencer has shined a light on it. I have cold called landowners and built relationships and got some fun tags at reasonable prices. Met some cool people along the way. Why end another way to hunt for dedicated hunters ?
