Best way to carry rifle on my pack

I’m packing in for a rifle Elk hunt and I’m curious on what is the best way to carry my rifle on my pack? Surely I’m not the only guy to have pack with out a rifle holster. Once I’m hunting it’ll never leave my hands but we’ll be packing in a day or two before season opens to scout.

In order to not give a generic answer, it would be helpful to know what pack your using. You might just could strap it to your pack in some way since you will have zero reason to be needing it in the pack in.

However you can safely secure it.
Dont over think it.
If its centered I think you have less chance of snagging it on something. Since your most likely avoiding it with your face anyways.

Unless you're into that sort thing.

I just use the stone glacier rifle sling. When im using my kifaru pack I have to do some stupid rigging crap since I cant stand those Kifaru gunbearer things.

I like my gun bearer. Takes a minute to get used to having the barrel entering your vision, but I appreciate the rifle riding low so as to not get hung up on branches, and handy so it doesn’t get knocked around when I take off the pack. It is only $25 so you might as well give it a try.

With a Stone Glacier, I use their sling. With a Kifaru, I use the Gun Bearer. With anything else, I just strap it on wherever it works.

I believe its made for a stone glacier pack but its simple enough, seems like it could work on a kifaru frame as well.

I like the Kifaru gun bearer. If I have no intention of using it, i just strap the barrel to my pack instead of using the top half of the gun bearer.

The pack I have is a Gregory stout 65. I think I have some straps for it anyway so might just strap it on there best I can

Actually let me rephrase. I borrowed a pack from someone to go on my scouting trip and was planning on ordering the same one for my hunting trip (my buddy needed his back). I just looked at Kifaru packs and saw they sell a 55L for $250 which is close enough to the same price. Might just go with that instead. Heard great things about kifaru packs, just always thought they started out much higher in price. The one I’m looking at is the woodsman 55. Anyone have experience with that pack?

That is just for a bag, you need a frame and suspension too. And if you are hunting in 2019, you aren’t getting a new Kifaru in time most likely. Definitely not in time to get acquainted with it and train with it some.

Most of the “gun slings” are intended for relatively easy access. If your looking to just pack it in, not use it until you hunt, might as well not waste money on something you don’t intend to use. Just strap it to your pack somehow.

However, it’s your money, so if you want to try something, go for it. .

I contemplated buying a SG sling for my SG pack, but if I don’t have it in hand(the rifle) then I’ll just strap it to my pack.

Yea that puts it into a better perspective! I think a couple of regular pack straps will work just fine for a pack in. This is my first western hunt so I’m trying to focus more on the enjoyment of the hunt rather than buying all the nicest gear (sometimes it’s tempting). Next few years I might start collecting some better gear.

Kifaru gunbearer. Have it on my EXO K2. Won’t hunt without one. Way to handy. Rifle goes to the shoulder in a split second.

some ALPS packs have a sling to hold a rifle. With an external frame pack, I like to add a stub of frame sticking up so I can hook my rifle sling on it (if I might want quick access.) If no access is needed, as others suggested, just strap it to the pack or inside a deep pocket. If the muzzle is up, I like to cover it with electrical tape. You can shoot through the tape, by the way.

With a tiny bit of skill, a couple feet of webbing and a sewing machine you can create almost any form of rifle pack sling.

Using that Gregory stout Id probably slide the rifle inside either the front stuff pocket or the side stuff pocket and then use a few compression straps to hold it secure while hiking in.
