Exo k4 beginner

I bought a K4 5000 last year and have used it for 1 overnight hunt and a bunch of training hikes. I will say that it can handle 40lbs loads quite well. For the overnight I pretty much filled it but I needed to carry 5L of water and some warmer clothes, and had some luxuries to share with friends. I didn't use the lid on that trip, though. 15 miles and felt great at the end, no fatigue from the heavy load (started around 40lbs and ended around 25lbs).

Unlike others, however, I do not find it to be a great daypack, at least for archery. I don't think it excels with light loads, it sort of "floats" on my back and restricts movement. YMMV. I think it's an excellent option for overnights and the only reason I won't continue using it is if I upgrade to the K4x.

I’m new to western elk and muley hunting and backpack hunting in general I’m from Pennsylvania and was wondering if an Exo k4 pack specifically the k4 5000 is worth spending the money for as a beginner or if there’s a similar more budget friendly option I should look at first or “buy once cry once”. I’m also curious on whether I should get a 3600 vs 5000 for a 3-4 day spike camping setup for archery and maybe some rifle outings any help is appreciated

Where are you in Pennsylvania? I’m heading to the keystone nationals to watch one of my cylinder heads and engines run. I will gladly bring one of my k4s and meet ya along the way.

Didnt read all the comments but for what youre wanting to do, I would go with the k5000. I have a 3600 and it is a great pack, for spiking more than a couple nights i do wish i had the 5000. Cant go wrong they are a great pack

I have the K4 7200 as my buy once cry once and regret nothing. The 5000 is better for what you need and has a superior zipper geometry. But my 7200 compresses enough to be a fine daypack. Make sure to watch all their fitting and sizing videos before you pull the trigger.

Buy once, cry once IMO. The K4 5000 compresses down so well that I personally wouldn't consider going smaller.

I completely agree. The 7200 compresses perfectly. It’s a do everything setup imo

I have the 5000 and the 2200. I think it's a great setup. But I have thought about the Teratorn instead of the 5000 as I really like late season hunts and I'm needing warmer and warmer bulky stuff and more food to bring along.

I have to tell you- I think the EXO K4 pack is like a cheat code. I have used Eberlestock Frame pack for years. I do a lot of weighted hiking year round and my back and shoulders hated me. When I finally gave into the hype and bought the K4 it was 100% worth it and I can tell you, the same 60# same bag I’ve been carrying for years feels exponentially lighter and less cumbersome in the K4 vs. my Eberlestock.
Obviously take this with a grain of salt because every body type is different

I just got the k4 5000. This will be my first season with "camp on my back". I will be using it as a day pack for most hunts but packing camp for high buck and rifle elk. I have tested putting some of my gear in it at home and I personally wouldn't go any smaller than the 5000. I had my sleep system (tent sleeping bag/pad) and a few other items there was still room for more stuff but I think i would be worried if I would have gotten anything smaller . The k4 is a great pack though. Good luck
