For all you glock 20 guys, just curious what ammo ur carrying in the backcountry? Also do any of you run aftermarket barrels? Ive got a KKM Precision barrel that i swapped the stock glock barrel with and lately i been liking the Doubletap 230 gr hard cast bullets. Lemme know!

I run the same ammo. I have not swapped the barrel but heard Lone Wolf? was the way to go since the stock barrels don't do well with lead.

Not to get too sidetracked from the thread, but here are a couple threads regarding 10mm's; aftermarket parts, holsters and ammo. I'm a pistol idiot so I've been reading them a bit lately as I've been finally putting my 10mm project on the front burner.

http://www.rokslide.com/forums/showthread.php?11948-Glock-Gen-4-G29

http://www.rokslide.com/forums/showthread.php?8263-Bear-defense-round-for-10mm

There is also a video out there I'm sure on Youtube of a guy shooting the DT 230s through a factory Glock barrel and they were key holing pretty damn bad I think at 30 yds or so. He then put in a Lone Wolf and nailed target after target. I ended up ordering a KKM barrel after seeing that because I didn't want to be restricted on what ammo I had to buy or chance tumbling bullets.

the stock glock barrels have a different rifling style cut into em so they dont like the hard cast stuff too much. the aftermarket stuff are mostly cut with traditional rifling and shoot the leaded stuff very accurately. I origionally was gonna go with lone wolf but they are at the bottom of the totem pole price wise which had me a tad concerned. lots of guys like em tho so who knows. The KKM barrel i got is very nicely made, fit and finish is perfect. Glad i went that route. Also i wasnt a huge fan of a cartoon wolf lasered into my barrel...lol

I have a couple Glock 10mm's. I still run the stock barrels, mostly because 95% of my carry is concealed carry and I don't need cast projectiles for defense from humans. Glock barrels are a hexagonal twist, and not a rifling. What happens is a cast (typically softer) bullet will "slip" over the twists and not grab and spin. This is one reason accuracy suffers with cast from a Glock bbl. The second (and dangerous) thing that happens, is as the bullet slips and slides over the twist, the lead galls to the bore and loads the bbl after a while. Enough galled lead and the next projectile in line can't get out and "boom." I know a few guys that shoot lead from their Glock bbls. Both insist on incessant cleaning to remove the lead and one of them has his own lead alloy or mixture that he claims is harder than what most cast bullets are made of. He says it doesn't gall like standard loads. I dunno...I don't shoot lead from my Glock bbls. I've thought about getting a 6" hunting bbl or even a standard aftermarket rifled bbl for woods carry, but I have a few boxes of Cor-Bon hunters, which are heavy jacketed rounds I carry for woods defense and use. I'm just not a gun hunter, so getting motivated to even hunt with a handgun isn't high on my priorities list.

As far as that silly wolf on the LW bbls, you can order them without it...thank God! LOL

Don't want to get this thread too far off track, but here is what Buffalobore says about their hard cast and Glocks. IMHO, the lead and Glocks issue has been overblown just a bit. I've shot action pistol and 3 gun for quite a few years and have seen quite a few (thousands) lead bullets shot out of Glocks. If you clean every once in awhile, you won't have any problems. Also, if someone does actually kaboom their Glock, I'm betting it's from shooting a jacketed bullet out of an already extremely leaded barrel.

For you guys that carry on your pack belt. Do you carry on your strong side or do you set it up as a cross draw?
I run a Glock 20 and alternate between a HPG Kit bag and the Safariland Glock 20, 21 6378 ALS Concealment Paddle Holster on the hip belt.
I also have a Safariland thigh rig set up for riding the wheeler.

I carry crossdraw when on my pack. My rangefinder is in the pouch on my strongside.

I have been debating myself since this thread started regarding posting about Serpa's. There are always fanboys who defend a $40 piece of plastic like its their first born child. Rok Slide is a mature site and a few posters seemed interested so I put it out there.

no need to defend the serpa it defends itself....... i would not be using mine unless it worked. it has proven itself to be a trusted piece of kit for me and will continue to use until proven otherwise. i spend up to 14 hours a day in mine in the mountains from thick jungle to high alpine, mud, snow, to dust and sand. it performs and i have great trust with mine. i am usually solo and gives peace of mind.

I use underwoodammo. Humans I use 165 gr jhp. It can double as animal defense. Velocity is about 1400. I will be ordering the 200 grqin xtp for hunting round.

I haveglock 20 in g 4 and g3. I had issues with g4. I replaced rsa to heavier spring 22lb with g3 steel rod adptor. Was having a ftf and slide not locking open. Goimg to test the g3 with springs etc...

I use kkm barrel to avoid hot round glock smileys. The double tap is not loaded hot. Check out the 10mm forums.

I wont have gun on back pack anymore. You put pack down with the gun and walk away a few feet to glass your seperated. I live in AZ and often hunt near mexico border. I have had groups of smugglers illegals etc.. walk up on me or near me. Once I had gun on pack in truck and had no protection. From now on the gun stays on me and when not hu ting ill move the xst rti holter to paddle holster so it not as visible on leg.

For my G20... I use Double Tap 200gr hardcast. Bought a few boxes of ammo and then decided reloading was the way to go so bought a few hundred of the bullets only. Hope to work up a load this spring. Only modifications I have made to my Glock is the Lone Wolf Barrel and Ameriglo night sights.

Glad the Serpa works for you.

Just a quick list of a few instructors/agencies that have banned the Serpa:

Larry Vickers
Kyle Defoor
Todd Green
Pat McNamara
Protective Shooting Concepts
Suarez International
Michigan Defensive Firearms Institute
Front Sight Firearms Training
National Park Service
FPF Training
F2S Consulting LLC

Those first fours names are enough for me, plus I have seen one fail with my own eyes. But to each their own.

SJAK, an agency here did a retention test with the serpas. They showed a quick snatch at the pistol with some force would break the holster right off your belt and assailant would have full operation of your weapon. This was amplified in colder weather where the plastic they used got weak and brittle. If your a LEO/Mil/armed security the serpa is not a good holster. Dont mean to upset anyone with my comment but its just the facts and evidence from the retention test. The same test was run with blade-tech and other thin kydex type holsters as well, they all broke during retention testing.

Just something to think about.

I have 3 inch kimber 1911 I would like to carry while bow hunting. I have a chest harness on at all time for my binos, so a koala or HPG probably won't work. It would be cool if kifaru made a koala that worked as a combo bino harness. I would like to maximize protection for my pistol. It doesn't matter to me if the pistol stays on my waist belt of my backpack.

It seems like this thread has taken a different route but I have Kifaru's Koala lite with the 2.5" pocket and for the past couple of years have used it to carry my bino's and rangfinder. There are two slot pockets inside the 2.5" pocket that my leica range finder rides in one, and the main compartment of the 2.5" pocket holds the bino's. Not sure if you're still interested but just given you some info. When I have a rifle I usually don't carry the pistol but still use the Koala. When running the pistol in the Koala I don't even know it's there and access to it is very fast as you no doubt know.

like i said until it gives me reason otherwise with personal use as far as failure in extreme conditions i will continue to use this design. as far as negligent discharges, that could only be a concern with immature use . so i cant hate on it........

as far as your list...... these places of business have a variety of users come through these courses with levels of ability that differs and or knowledge with firearms. the liability of having users with limited use and not being with second nature in handling or drawing a firearm could lead to these negligent discharges that are the concern. an inexperienced user could improperly draw there firearm with finger in a unsuitable position thus pre maturely engage the trigger(could happen with any holster). everyone should have a mental strong hold on there trigger finger and its position to weapon at all times in stressful situations. there is a difference those who do and do not and i bet those who do have these attributes in many aspecs in there life.

Aron took the above pic

I use a Kifaru panel and a Cross Fire Elite Shooting Gear Safari holster. The holster is very well made and it has a spring loaded thumb break which I like a lot. I carry a 329pd in this rig and wore it on my Eberlestock Gunslinger last year with no issues.
I've been looking at the HPG Kit bag for I'd like to stash my binoculars and gun in that but have concerns of interference with my bow string so not sure on that one. I don't like the idea of being unarmed when my pack is off and have considered tossing in a lightweight nylon holster to put on my belt if I ditch my pack. I don't really care for that idea so not sure what I'll do just yet. Maybe I'll get the HPG Kit bag and rig a way to dock and lock it to the top lid of my pack.

Best I've found for woods carry of my Glock 20 is the Bianchi UM 84/92 Universal Military Holster in a cross draw on my hip. In this fashion the gun is completely protected from larch needles, mud, and rocks even if I am sliding down a hill on my butt. It is completely secure as well, and quick and easy to get to. Also, in seconds it can be removed from your pack belt and placed on the belt of your pants or anywhere your back or chest pack has webbing for that matter (not sure why you would want it anywhere else though if your chest is already covered with your binoculars and a range finder).
