Best Way to Carry Heat in the Backcountry???

When I carry I use a shoulder holster. I have a .44 Redhawk. It is heavy but will get the job done if ever needed. It is out of the way to draw my bow and easily accessible if needed. Sometimes I just carry my bear spray. If I was carrying anything less than a .44 with hard cast bullets in grizzly country I would feel better with just the bear spray. If I am not in WY or ID I don't take anything ....too much extra weight.

If I am not going to far I will pack the bear spray as primary and my Glock for backup. Something about having an empty can and being shook up already makes the extra weight not feel so bad. It would suck to hike out after having to use the bear spray and not having anything but an arrow. When I am going light weight solo I usually just pack the bear spray. The numbers don't lie. I know it works.

When going back in for meat or scouting known bear country I carry a Ruger Alaskan in .454. That's if it's handy to bring...not always a chance to fetch it from home base before going back...

I carry a G19 in a Comp-Tac Minotaur (fit for that gun) and I have found that this works pretty well for me at home/work. For the backcountry I got a G20SF and I like it a lot. The gun is (for me) soft shooting and accurate. I don't remember how I got the idea to try but the G20 fits quite well in the Minotaur for the G19. I assume this is because of the leather backing on the holster is pliable and allows for the added thickness of the G20. I got the idea to try to fit the setup on my KU5200 belt (over the padding, but under the accessory strap or whatever) and it worked perfectly. I keep a KU small pouch on that side the setup does not interfere with the belt or the pouch and I'm able to access the weapon without issue.

I tried to post pics but I am unable to do so. Here is link to the pics though..

Every time I read one of these threads it makes me jealous you guys get to carry a pistol with you instead of a long gun. Don't take it for granted!

basic kydex, molded for 329. with techlok attachment system.
fillthefreezer, is that something you can carry on your pack belt and clip off and onto your belt if you drop your pack? Or do you just wear it on your belt or pack belt? I had a pancake leather holster made that I wear on my belt under the pack belt, but not so sure that doesn't screw the whole carry the load on your hips advantages of good packs. I like to have the weapon on me because I've dropped my pack in the heat of the moment and been off in pursuit only to later spend precious hunting time looking for my pack wondering why the hell I dropped it.

Glock 20 (10mm)..... if I'm hunting (other then archery "state law prohibits open carry only concealed during archery") I use an Alaskan guide chest rig... which allows me access to pistol while packing in, using my climber, etc.

If I'm archery hunting I have to have it concealed and I may carry IWB, or Safe-t-packer etc (depending on the weather).

When recreational backpacking I use a safe-t-packer attached via kifaru's molle adapter on my duplex frame. I then throw a kydex IWB holster in my pack for wearing around at camp.

I have a S&W 329PD .44 Mag. I wish I could remember the brand, but I have a nylon type hip holster for it that I strap to my pack. It came as a shoulder/hip combo, but if you remove all the straps it is pretty light and holds the gun well.

I do wish I had a better option for carrying if I decide to drop my pack, but belt hoslters don't work very well when you are wearing the pack so I haven't come up with a good option.

For you guys that carry on your pack belt. Do you carry on your strong side or do you set it up as a cross draw?
I run a Glock 20 and alternate between a HPG Kit bag and the Safariland Glock 20, 21 6378 ALS Concealment Paddle Holster on the hip belt.
I also have a Safariland thigh rig set up for riding the wheeler.

Strong side for me. It rides in the same spot as it would when I carry concealed.

yes, thats why i went with the techlok. it comes off quick. no need to unthread pack or pants belt to get it on or off. and with the kydex, i have the tension adjusted up with the "shake test" so have confidence it aint falling out.
also, the bottom of the holster is mostly closed, enough that when you slip and plant your ass, the mud/snow does not go up the barrel

also, when leaving it hooked to the belt, and setting your pack down, like to rest, it will flop around. and beat the hell out of your grips. so plan accordingly ;)

What a timely thread...I bought a Glock 20 2 days ago. I like the Serpa w/paddle idea.
I found one with just the paddle and another that has the paddle and belt loops. I don't see myself carrying this except hunting. Which one should I get?

I prefer the Safariland lock and release over the Serpa, but that's just me. (Google Blackhawk Serpa Issues)

For backpacking purposes I think the paddle would be plenty.

Exact holster I just got yesterday in the mail, for my G29. Jherald turned me on to them. Still waiting on a clip so I can conveniently transfer it from my pack belt to pants belt. The holster seems real nice, and I think I will like that lock feature.
