Best tent for Alaska sheep hunt

Used a Niak this year for my first sheep hunt. Endured some serious wind, rain, and light snow in it, and it handles it like a champ. Used it on a goat hunt and it paid for itself the second night weathering a heck of a rain/sleet storm. During the storm while goat hunting, I shared it with my brother, a little cramped but it could have been worse. My brother made the comment about being impressed at how well it handled the weather.

I am sold on it being the best compromise as far as the weight vs durability debate goes. I'd also not have any worries about using it during the winter as well.

This has been a great thread, I found this article that is kind of long but it worth the time if you want some great info and better understanding of some things

With the carbon poles that they have this tent is right at 3lbs, for you experienced sheep guys, what is WRONG with this tent? Would you go with this?

I’m curious if there’s any Bibler users out there, how they’ve compared to the various Hilliberg tents in extreme winds.
I took a Bibler Eldorado on a Chugach sheep hunt years ago and endured some serious wind. The poles are fairly flexible and the tent was basically laying down on top of me, but the poles never broke and I stayed dry. The tent stood back up as the wind died down and was good as new.

Well after much research, money played a bigger factor and weight. I ended up with a Kuiu 2p mountain star. Kuiu is have a huge sale and got the tent for 40% off. $340 for the set. I had met with the rep and was able to set it up and take a good look.

I've been happy with mine. It has done well on sheep hunts and goat hunts on Kodiak.

Interesting this group leans to the free standing side of the debate. Kuiu and Helle are great. Some of us need a longer tent (90") and the good options dwindle quick. So far, the Big Sky International tents have done well on my AK sheep hunts. The design is great, but stocking them seems to be a challenge.

I’ve also used the Kuiu Storm Star 2 person tent. It held up for 2 sheep season but a wind storm sheared one of the poles.

Kuiu Mountain Star 2P, with aluminum poles. We spent this particular night packing my buddies elk out. Dust the snow off the tent, she stood right back up. Nothing damaged. I have around 60 nights logged in it, absolutely love it.
This is my tent of choice on any backcountry hunt over 4 miles deep

My tent anecdotes from this past sheep season:

One of my guides Kuiu tent broke poles in a "moderate" windstorm.
In the same windstorm, the clients Stone Glacier Solus withstood the gusts.

The Hilleberg Rogen and Niak proved themselves once again and are my two gold standard, all around sheep tents. The Niak, in my humble opinion, is the best all around sheep tent for one person, early season sheep hunts.

The Hilleberg Soulo is the undisputed "bombproof" sheep tent, just a little on the heavy side.
My next sheep tent will be a Hille Niak. Pricey but I’m sure it’s worth it

Post #39 chiming in again. I'm 6'2. 215, so not little but not huge.. if you're under 6'4 The Silvertip is great for 1 person. Sleep on one half. The other side is gear up by your head and cook/situp space by your feet.. organization is key for that tent.. condensation was a little pesky each morning (bring a sponge). I'm sure I'll get a wild hair and figure out how to run a bug net in there because, skeeters are persistent. Could you squeeze 2 people in there ? Absolutely, but you would be covering your gear outside. Weighing in at 2#8 oz with an aluminum alps pole and 6 stakes. (Make the rest out of sticks)

Ran hilleberg, north face, mountain hardware, seek outside, msr, narwhal equip, sierra designs, cabelas, on sheep hunts.

Hands down the worse was msr and hilleberg. Msr leaked, both of them. The hille enan was the wettest condensation tent I have ever seen. Hilleberg responded to emails and TOLD me they cover their sleeping bag with trash bags and carry a towel when they use their enan. THAT is what the company told me. Soooooo….

The 4 man tipi has been great. But hands down winner of them all was the seirra designs and mountain hardware. Two pole designs. Not free standing. 180 bucks each and weather Kodiak goats for almost a decade and winds over 100. Amazing little tents. Flashlight I think was the name of one…pct 1 or meridian 1 was the name of the mtn hardware.

But that’s just my experience of a few hundred days on mountains in Alaska. Everyone has a different story and experience.

I've done aa lot of ultralite back pack style trips including two sheep hunts and nothing beats the Big Agnes line of tents. I owned the Flycreek and it lasted a long time. I upgraded to the copper spur UL1 and I love it more. They're lite and durable and hold up in the extreme wind. They're also cheaper than half the crap I've read on this thread.
