There is a brewery out here in Virginia called Devil's Backbone and they brew a Vienna Lager that is my go to if it is on tap. If it is not, then im pretty simple and go with a Sam Adams Boston Lager.

My "Best" Wasn't because of the beer....

One was back in my youth coming off a 4 day backpacking trip with this super sweet [and hot!] little blond i used to tool around with....dragged into Camp Curry [Yosemite] late in the afternoon....

Another was after a long 14 mile pack out of Kalalau valley on Kauai when my buddy tweaked his knee and I had to carry both of our packs out...stopped at a little roadside stand where the Hawaiian kid had some cold ones on ice.

Mostly now-a-days its when coming off a backcountry hunt....still grimey....but just leaning back without the pack weight on my shoulders and enjoying the sky...the breeze...and feeling the satisfaction of a strenuous adventure.

I had a Fosters with a couple of my guys at a FOB in the middle of Afghanistan, run by some of our allies. Fosters normally is crap beer, but circumstances can certainly change a horrible beer into the best beer ever. Plus, I got to stick it to General Order Number One, which made it that much sweeter. When I was done, I also ate some gratuitous bacon, cuz 'Merica!

Old milwaukees best ice (aka: beast ice). Tasted like shit, but damn did I have fun when I used to drink that stuff.

Like a few others said, lots of good beer these days. Partial to the stuff brewed up here, tons of micros across the state.

For all you Seattle folks, my favorite has to be Manny's Pale Ale. And I haven't had it in years because I rarely make it to Seattle anymore.

The NorthEast has some pretty good brews though. Maine Beer Company's "Lunch", Heady Topper, Lawson's, Treehouse, Trillium, Night Shift - I'm pretty much a Pale Ale and IPA fan...

If you're into fruity beers, Dry dock apricot ale is one of the best I've tried lately.

^^^This! Unfortunately it's about as easy to find as a unicorn. Even around the local Russian River communities it's nearly impossible to find. My second and third favorite would have to be Glacier Brewhouse IPA and Broken Tooth (formerly Moose's Tooth), Fairweather IPA, but not necessarily in that order.

The beer scene in MS hasn't been all that great until recently. Having said that, I still can't get my favorite beer here. Any time I am in Houston, TX or anyone I know travels to the right spots out west, I have them get me some Moose Drool. Last time I was in Ennis I picked up some Devil's Hump red ale and I may like it better than Moose Drool. As far as stuff I can get locally I tend to prefer Lazy Magnolia's Southern Pecan or Parish Brewing's Canebrake.

Another homebrewer here so some of my favorites are beers I've brewed.

To use a famous Rokslide comment: Beers are like boots. What works for one might not work for another. If you are a fan of American light lagers (Miller, Bud, Coors) then no amount of talk is going to convince you that any IPA is a good beer.

Unfortunately I like a variety of styles and I'm a big fan of drinking local beer because it's fresh. This is especially true with hop forward beers like pale ales and IPA's. It's also the reason I've always been underwhelmed by some cult beers like Pliny since it is probably old and well traveled by the time I got to drink one.

My absolute favorites are some beers by Roughtail Brewing in Midwest City, OK. Their Pale Ale, Little Blue Pils and ERWO are all tops.

Honorable Mention: Deschutes beers especially their dark styles which age better (Abyss, Obsidian and Black Butte)
Fishing Florida: Cigar City's Jai Alai
Fishing Alaska: Alaskan Brewing Freeride or Icy Bay
Hunting Wyoming: Hot Streak IPA by Blacktooth Brewing in Sheridan
Hunting Texas: Yellow Rose by Lone Pint Brewing
I need to hunt in Idaho because I really like a few beers by Payette Brewing in Boise. Rodeo and Blood Orange Rustler.

I'll agree with that one! We make their cans for them and it sure makes you thirsty watching all the empty beer cans go by on the inspection platform!

Has anyone ever heard of Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale? My brother-in-law, down in the Pittsburgh area, just told me about it and says that it's now his favorite. It's pretty expensive though, something like $16 for a 4 pack.
