I am looking at buying a traditional recurve bow. I currently shoot compound and am wanting to get in to traditional as well. I have been looking at the Black Hunter Recurve set and wondered if anyone has had good luck with it. Not necessarily hunting with it, but just practicing and getting the hang of it. Not sure if I need to find a used recurve that could be used as a hunting bow, or just go with something like the black hunter and when I am ready then upgrade.

Also, I will probably get left handed. I currently shoot right handed, but I am left eye, right hand dominant and I assume it will be easier for me to aim shooting left handed so I don't have to close my eye. Will get a 40-45 pound bow since I have never shot lefty.

I just recently picked up a black hunter bow, and I am impressed. For a starter bow, you will not do any better. Pick up a light set of limbs with it, 35-40 # and then get a set of hunting weight limbs. You will not need any "more" bow than a the black hunter. Although be warned, traditional archery is addictive and if it gets its hooks in you, you will own additional bows. Enjoy the experience and don't over-bow yourself at the start.

Did you get the black hunter set that comes with arrows? If you did, how are those arrows? I wouldn’t use them to hunt but just wondered if they were decent enough to practice with.

I purchased just the bow, so I cannot comment on the arrows. I am sure they will get you started, but will soon reveal themselves to not be the proper spine for your draw length. Either way, I would factor in some arrows tuned to the bow, it will go a long way to improve accuracy and fun.

Heard good things about the black hunters but haven’t used them.

You could also get a white feather lark and some trad tech limbs. Both are very popular and solid options.

Personally I think the grip is a huge factor In shootability for a bow though. A cheap ILF rig that lets you swap grips out might go a long ways too.

And I agree with the above poster on limb weight. Get some 30 or 35s max to start and get your form down really well before you go to heavier limbs!

Where are you geographically btw?

Ilf setup is my suggestion.

Tbow riser
Nika c1 limbs
“Stilldub” custom string on ebay
Gold tip blems
Bateman tab

Jam up package that you can setup/tune for you as you progress.

I've heard good things about the Black Hunter. I started my son on a TopArchery TD recurve from Amazon. I'd keep it simple to get started then jump into the ILF stuff if you want. I prefer to keep it simple.

I have both the Black Hunter recurve and an EXE F261 ILF recurve.
Both affordable Chinese made bows that have a good reputation.

I like the light weight, compact size and feel of the Black Hunter.
The F261's length/weight is more stable, it's very tunable and there's plenty of ILF limb options out there.
