Beginner fly rod

This is my latest adventure. I picked up a fly rod for bass fishing a couple of years ago but was never successful. As of the last week I have dived back into fly fishing partially because I have always wanted to learn but also because my son is getting to the age where he is starting to enjoy being outside more. I want to get him hooked on fishing a spinner and I can practice fly. With that being said my buddy recommend an Echo Carbon XL pole 4W-5W and a Lamson Remix reel. I am still doing research into lines and flys etc but was just curious what you guys think about that rod/reel
Not sure your sons age but since I see you are in NoCO look into Colorado Youth Outdoors. They have several good programs and summer camps that can get both your boy and you plenty of good knowledge on both spin and fly fishing. They have a great campus in SE FoCo that has amazing bass fishing.

I dont have experience with Echo rods but I have ran Lamson reels for a couple decades. Probably have 6 or 7 reels in my fleet of rods and never had an issue with them. Orvis makes some great beginner packages and has carbon reels that are indestructible if you have a younger angler that might not be as gentle on expensive fly fishing gear.

I am getting into the fly fishing game this spring. I was able to pickup the Echo Traverse kit for ~$280 out the door (shipped) this morning; thanks for the recommendations on this thread. Excited to get into it. I am guilty of getting way to into the weeds on what setup to start with anytime I pick up something new like this. Ready to just go fish!

I would go buy an Orvis outfit in whatever budget you want. Opinions on Orvis vary but I have had good luck with them. There are better choices for start up rods , reels and lines but if you lack the experience to know what you really need Orvis setups will get you into it with descent products.

I've heard good things about the Traverse rod, but that might just be paid advertising thinly veiled as "expert opinion".

What I do know is that I took a $90 rod straight from China (no American company involved, Maxcatch) and cast it next to my $1,000 Scott rod in the same weight with the same reels and lines (switching back and forth) and the difference was minor. The reel seat on the cheaper rod was not as tight/secure, but the function of the rod was excellent.

So, I'm sort of American made high end, or cut out all middlemen and go for the direct from China special for the rod.

What might be a bit unnecessary is to take the cheaper rod, slap a new name on it, offer a nice website and American "brand" while quadrupling the price of the product.

The Clearwater setups are a pretty good deal for someone just starting out. Hard to beat their warranty too.
