I need some input from someone more knowledgeable than myself when it come to minimum barrel specs. So I picked up a tikka 6.5 creedmoor with the intent of sending it of to HCA for a rebarrel. Changed my mind and decided to send off the 270 wsm to get a 300 wsm barrel installed. So I want to get it threaded for a suppressor. Looking over the specs sheet from tbac below they recommend .662 for a 9/16x24 thread. I would have to cut off nearly 7 inches to get to that diameter. Not ideal. So the question... how terrible would shooting 6.5 through a 1/2x28 thread be? I can get a qd mount to fit my can with that thread pitch and would be able to choose whatever barrel length I wanted.

No I have a stock 6.5 barrel. The 300wsm is a savage rifle that's getting close to being shot out I believe.

What do you mean “How terrible?”

I’m getting ready to thread a 308 in 1/2x28.

Mostly worried about the durability of the threaded portion if I happen to take a spill and the can takes a hit. Losing a 1/3 of the material roughly has me questioning it.

If you take a spill and tear out 1/2X28 threads on the barrel, your shiny new suppressor is probably in worse shape than the barrel.

1/2"x28 is a common pitch on sporter contoured 6.5s, you should be fine.
I agree, 1/2×28 on a .264 cal won't be all bad and should be fine but I'd still lean towards 9/16 if at all possible. 1/2×28 in a .308 cal doesn't leave much meat on the bone. I'd personally shy away from it.

I have 7mm RMs, 270 (regular and WSM), 6.5 CM, & 243 all threaded 1/2X28. THis and 5/8X24 are the most common thread pitches for supressors. I have not had any problems. Most of what I shoot suppressed is 1/2X28 and bigger than .223

Thanks for all of the input guys. Purchased the QD mount and I'll get it to the smith as soon as it gets here.
