Banning Hunting Tech in Idaho

I'll be really bummed out if the trail camera ban goes into effect. It's super fun getting pictures and I'd really enjoy doing it with my kids now that they're getting older. They're not very effective for mule deer but it's sure fun to see what all finds is way down a trail.

That’s the part that is kinda annoying about the whole thing. They lumped it all into one rule change instead of individualy banning the technologies. I think if it doesn’t get passed that they will
Have to go back and split it into different rules

I’ll finish with stats are something we do know and harvest numbers haven’t changed in the last 25yrs even with technology advancements. If the argument is that we get it done faster than in the 80s when it took 2 weeks instead of 4 days then stick to that narrative.
So we keep hearing how there aren't as many game animals because of wolves in ID yet harvest numbers haven't changed. Think that may be due to technology and the long range shooting craze?

Basically in a nutshell, banning something like thermals for big game hunting, which I am all for, will not change the use of thermals at all. The people that are using them to locate game are people that push the limits and have to have everything in their favor. They will not change their ways. Just like all the stupid new gun laws that the anti's keep pushing down our throats, won't change how the criminals operate and those are the people that kill others.

As someone that had a thermal and sold it (to a guy in ID) because they were banning them in UT I disagree.

I will add that your take is not representative of how the majority of people react. Look at the various things that have been banned over time and how they are no longer used. Look at how game limits have changed over the years and how people adapted. The vast majority of people follow the law. A small minority don't.

Agreed. Even cell cams have made it less fun for my kids. They used to rush to meet me at the computer to look at pictures when I’d go swap out SD cards. Now I get all the pics sent to my phone at 8am and by the time I get home from work I’ve forgot to even show them.

Totally agree. Wish they could have judged each component on its own merits. There's some things I like and some things I don't like proposed. Mix it all together and it's a turd sandwich.

I listened to it while I was in my office Friday, and I have to say it didn’t come out like I thought it would based on previous clips about this topic.

In my area the cell camera thing really isn’t an issue because there isn’t any cell coverage in the majority of the places I hunt, but as they mentioned that’s going to change in the near future.

In regards to the open sight/ muzzleloader/ long range, personally I’d like to see more and lengthier open sight and muzzleloader seasons while still maintaining a reduced any weapon season.

Thermals I’m conflicted on but ultimately I think the bad out weighs the good. If you really wanted to make a difference, getting the trapping seasons back to what it was would go farther in reducing wolf numbers than allowing thermals.

I just started listening to this. I already sent my comments in to my Representative. I agree with Dioni that this would have been much better broken into singular rules.
Edit:
Just finished it up. Lots of talk from the guy on the mule deer working group. It sounds like he wasn't on the HAT committee, so I'm not really sure what he had to add to the conversation other than he saved a pile of bucks from over harvest by convincing IFG to convert a unit to muzzies only. I noticed he didn't add what unit those hunters that chose not to ml hunt were pushed to. They went somewhere, I doubt they sat out hunting deer.
As for the HAT committee, I'm not convinced that there even needed to be that level of conversation or effort.
I seen a lot of comments on FB and other SM talking about how the committee went against public opinion and IFG wasn't listening to hunters. This probably riled a bunch of folks into contacting their reps, who in turn are going to be critical of anything that is proposed. This more than likely could have been floated through legislature without all the negative attention that it's received.

How will they know if you have a thermal? Are we ok with a warden checking inside everyone’s backpacks when they see them out hunting? What about cell cameras? Checking your phone too?

Serious question.

Be sited if you were caught using it. Maybe if they saw someone rolling down a road scanning clear cuts or they glass someone using it. I’m not positive but I think they have the right to check your bag anyways? I could be wrong

I’m saying they have to check all the good people following the law to find the bad ones. The more laws we get the more hassle there will be for everyone, not just the abusers.

When wardens are checking everyone’s backpacks and cellphones to find the thermal and cell camera users, let’s make sure we are all ok with it

or imagine being in a group where one dude packed a thermal without letting anyone else know. Then everyone catches a charge when F&G does a random bag and tag check.
