Banning Hunting Tech in Idaho

There are already laws in place that limit our use of those first 4 items. The latter 3 no
I think the working group at people like me are asking for idfg to start limiting the use of the latter 3

If they are at the top of the list Perhaps they might need to be further regulated before we outlaw the things at the bottom of the list.
We want to solve our problems by blaming other users.

It wasn't that long ago that exposed turret scopes were few and far between. Now, every major manufacturer makes one that is in the budget of almost every hunter. Most of them are repeatable at least once. This isn't meant to be an argument against long range shooting, just an example of how fast that technology has advanced. The thermal technology is going to get better and more affordable. When there are more guys in the field carrying them (and there will be) then not are we going to wish that we did something sooner?
As for cell cams, that technology is only going to advance as well. We aren't that far from being able to send or receive pictures over satellite to our cell phones. Cell cams will be able to do the same, without a cell signal.

As far as what? Long range hunting? Cell cams?

As far as cell cams go I don’t really see that big of an advantage that you gain from using a cell cam. I personally don’t know any guys that have killed an animal because of cell camera use. The podcast perspective was kind of weird because it almost seemed like their argument was that the animal doesn’t have the privacy anymore that they used to? Or that somehow it’s an advantage to know what caliber or animals are on the landscape. To me I don’t really care if I have to hike in and check my sd card and change batteries but I enjoy doing that stuff. Some people don’t enjoy it.
I do agree with a lot of guys that long range hunting has made a huge advantage on success rates and I’m sure in the future it will be addressed as they alluded to on the podcast. But if we don’t start with something like thermals or drones we aren’t going to get to the point and addressing long range hunting. I enjoy long range hunting myself but I also am able to step back and realize that if it’s going to negatively effect my kids and grandkids availability to opportunity to hunt in the future than I will gladly go back to shorter range hunting but that’s just me

Again, I’m not sure where the data says anything close to what is being claimed. There is no data that says long range hunting has made a huge advantage on success rates. Do we see it social media platforms/videos more than before…absolutely! (We’re definitely more exposed to it, but we can’t base this stuff off of feelings). But the numbers don’t show us that trend, just like harvest rates haven’t increased due to thermals and cell cameras being around in the last 5yrs or more. Harvest numbers haven’t really changed in the last 20yr or so and technically Idaho has seen an increase in more hunters so if my math is mathing our success rates are technically down.

How many guys do you know that actually fill out the Hunter surveys or if they do do are they actually honest? Cause I don’t know anyone that does them or is honest on them.

Again, using opinions and feelings. If people aren’t filling out correctly and actually being honest they have been consistent at that for the last 20yrs. Of course there’s some outliers but it’s not skewing data that much.

So what’s your reason for not wanting any regulation on the new technology?

How are we correlating success rates with populations vs technology?

The aggravating part of all of this and the HAT/Mule deer group is all the opinions and ideas behind regulating technology for the benefit of our ungulates. Taking away thermals/cell cameras does nothing for them. Taking away the idea of “long range” hunting does nothing. A guy with a thermal still kills one deer with or without the thermal. Guy with cell camera still kills a deer, not 50. So what are we taking about? Do we hate that with cameras and thermals a guy can be more strategic with what they’re wanting to kill by looking over more animals and that bothers us…then say that. Don’t say these tools are killing more animals by us having them because that’s not true. You know what effects deer..habitat, winter, predators. Take your pick. No one wants to have the hard convo that reduced tags statewide would have a bigger beneficial impact on deer. That impacts way too many pocket books. This is a great example of what kicking the can down the road looks like
