Don’t feed it and it will die on it’s own. Where blasting or kindly enlightening the OP on the thread is going to bump it up getting more attention. Now that thread moves up in google search results. If you feel that some moderation is needed (gps coordinates or something way too specific is posted) please use the report button.

My view is oversimplified and probably won’t be popular, but have we ever really seen anything good come out of thread where someone discusses a unit specifically?

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a prominent poster on Rokslide ask about a specific unit, and the threads started by guys who join Rokslide just to ask about a unit are looking for a free handout. I get that those guys may not know any better, but would you really value anything they have to say related to western hunting if they‘re in here just hoping someone will tell them where to go?

And, for what it’s worth - if we ‘re going to ban talking about specific units - I’d ban politics, religion, and discussion about the economy, while we’re at it because those never really get us anywhere either.
This is my thought as well. I don't think anybody is getting groundbreaking info from them, and sometimes I would imagine they are getting the wool pulled over their eyes.

I was a member on a contractors forum for awhile that didn't allow any number discussion when it came to pricing. You could discuss pricing strategy and techniques, just not numbers, as they felt, rightfully, that pricing is something every business has to figure out for themselves, and nobody should be pulling numbers off the internet. It worked quite smoothly, and those threads got closed quickly. The rules were clear cut, and enforcement was pretty simple.

I'd argue, (and I'm not trying to be disrespectful, here, as the mods overall do an admirable job) that as the Frank and Aron thread recently showed, where there is a will, there is certainly a way when it comes to moderation.

I just don't see the upside, I guess.

Ever browsed through forums on monstermuleys? It seems like two thirds of all posts there are about units and specific areas. It's not that bad here on rokslide. I don't mind nearly as much when people post a question about a unit and then ask for all potential responses to be sent as a PM. I actually try to generally help some members here via pm if it's an area I'm knowledgeable about.

It is frustrating when it's someone's first post because if I help someone with info I try to follow up with them after the hunt and it's frustrating when they disappear and leave me hanging.

Yes, history and analysis has shown that posters who ask for unit specific, guide specific, or even state specific info, and then disappear without reporting back, are by and large NOT serious and were/are basically trying to look cool on internet. Same goes for the gear, equipment, clothing, weapons questions, but possibly not nearly as blatantly insincere.

I didn’t kill them but agree with with the decision to based on I couldn’t see any value coming from them, just speculation which easily becomes rumors.
Why isn’t the hunt to eat thread closed?

Why wasn’t the Remi leaving cutting the distance thread closed

Why wasn’t the Randy newberg getting paid by Arizona thread closed

Or any other thread around rumors closed? The list could go on…

Not to mention frank posted his side publicly to which people went to a public forum to discuss.

Just trying to figure out where the line in the sand is drawn….. seems like it’s drawn if Aaron’s name is involved. Just my observations

Maybe I've missed it but I've heard nothing of banning the people that mention this information. After all the words don't type themselves.
I bet that would go over well!

I don't think the units are the problem. The problem is the amount of people coming to the whole freakin state.
With that being said there're a lot of ridiculous questions on rokslide like: "I'm from XYZ state back East and since I've been watching a lot of youtube I decided I'm coming to CO for my first ever DIY OTC rifle elk hunt. My question is: should I bring a sleeping bag?" I mean seriously people. C'mon now.

Well no, you need a quilt.

How about a secret Unit code in which you need a code sheet to crack? Have to be a Rokslide member for 5 years before you get the code sheet. This way, people will be confused as hell and long time members can ask specific questions about specific units.

Fair questions. I’m only a couple weeks into this so I’m learning the lines myself. They may have flown under the radar? Personally I haven’t read any of those mentioned which brings me to a point that it takes a village as we’re volunteering our time and thus not one of us individually will catch everything. You as members are valuable as well, this forum is self policed well and what gets reported is also welcomed as we can’t be everywhere all the time.

I tried to find franks comments on his Instagram with no luck other than a respectful parting of ways and thank you to kifaru. Not being insta savvy maybe I missed them or what was shared here was from a private message or a “story” that disappears in 24hrs?

No. RS, as great as we all know it is, is small potatoes compared to Go Hunt, Huntin Fool, Eastmans, and all the others out there providing information. If reducing hunter numbers is the goal, ban any thread that mentions the state. But realistically, there are no more secret states/units only honey holes that guys protect with their lives.

Almost double the “no” votes over “yes” votes. We have spoken. No place is “your spot” on public land.

I’ve PMd spots, and have even discussed unit specific strategies on threads on this site. I’ve helped many hunters down their first animals and I think that’s a great way for hunters to be treated.

If somebody comes in with no introduction, no willingness to ask the right questions, and is just looking for “spots” those are the ones you ignore. Key word is ignore, and move on.

Banning units or zones from being talked about is an absolute joke of an idea.

I think you’re right to an extent, but to me it’s not about reducing hunter numbers - it’s about increasing the numbers of quality hunters and/or quality members on this site. The core members on here and the information shared by that group is what makes this site good. Would you rather share a drainage with considerate hunters who respect your space and would put the effort into doing things right, or would you rather share the drainage with guys who disregard the wind, flock shoot elk, and rely on ATVs to get them around? If increasing numbers of hunters in western states are inevitable, I hope they’re hunters at least don’t mind sharing the land with.

A lot of the guys who come on here looking to be told where to go are the same type who eventually pay for info that Go Hunt, Huntin Fool, Eastman’s etc, provide. It‘s a shortcut for these guys to all access info that can generally be found from a state’s game and fish website for free. They’ve got no relevant experience and don’t want to invest the effort into getting it. Again, I can’t relate to that and generally wouldn’t have interest in the opinion of someone who does.

Obviously not everyone who subscribes to a hunt service is a slob hunter, but they certainly aren’t putting the same effort into finding an area to hunt as a lot if us.

I‘d prefer Rokslide be free, and I’d prefer that the members on here continue to help each other with gear reviews, technical help, and general info that isn’t specific to a state or a unit.

I think that kind of thing attracts a better quality of member, and one whose opinion or insight I’d potentially be interested in.

I’m not a class warrior and wouldn’t want to exclude people based on their ability to buy or appreciate high end gear, but I sure don’t give a shit about the opinion of someone who comes on here basically hoping to be told where to go to kill an animal and the extent of their knowledge about sleeping someplace besides their bed at home is either based on hotels, RVs, or Coleman quality car camping gear.

Not everyone can spare the time to totally scout areas (family, travel, time off work, extra expences that will go towards a hunt of a life time, that sort of thing) Public land is exactly that public land, (still have not figured out the anger about non-residents) without those hunters maybe there would be less outfitters, if a person asks for information and one is so insecure to help out a fellow hunter (with in reason) I feel for the greed of that situation, You do not have to give up your honey holes, ( your not the only one who knows that special sweet spot) but general informaton and perhaps what to expect is just good a standard among hunters. Face it we are dwindling in numbers as hunters which equals and plays into the gun grabbers logic, if we do not support each other were are doing ourselves a disadvantage.
