Baffles me.

I am a big fan of small, handy rifles. Especially, Remington Model Sevens . I'm on alot of forums and groups and follow threads about compact rifles closely. I've seen a trend lately that just baffles me. I see a photo of a sweet compact like a model seven , Howa, Browning micro, and many others, and I dont understand the scope choices. Yesterday I saw a picture of a Model Seven .243 with a 6.5-20×50 Leupold with sunshade. The scope was longer than the 18.5" barrel! The photo was taken in a stand that might have given a 100 yard shot. Two pounds of scopes on six pound rifles! 3-18, 4-24, 8-32× scopes, see them everyday, just dont get it. Enjoy that compact, use an appropriate glass.

It probably is and the person who started it hasn't realized it yet.
I'm sure it will! I've seen those on compacts also. I dont judge, but I dont think you need a 18" two pound scope on a 36-39" long, five to six pound rifle with16-20" barrels. In my opinion, which means squat, kinda defeats the purpose of carrying a compact rifle.

I get what your saying, we have a subforum for firearms, and yet people choose to post about firearms in the general forum all the time!!!! Imagine that!!
Well , I didn't really think this post was about a firearm so much as a trend that I noticed. Please move the original post if you can.

Good grief..... WTH does it matter what somebody else likes/does to THEIR rifle?
As I said, it was just my opinion on something I saw and found funny and confusing. I like small scopes on small rifles, thats all. I really dont care what someone does to their rifle , i just found it funny having a huge scope on a compact gun. It is their choice and to each their own. Once again, only my observations on a trend.

I put a whopper 3-12 scope *gasp* on a compact. And *double gasp* it's not a traditional gloss or black scope..... Am I going to hell?.....

Is that a 600? And no, that scope doesn't really look out of place. The one i referenced was a BIG Leupold 6.5-20×50 with the sunshade. It was almost touching the front sight!

Nope, no mirage there! The other thing i found funny about the picture i saw was that it was taken in a stand and showed the area a bit. I doubt if the kid could have seen or shot more than 50 yards. It was a pretty thick area like a creek bottom crossing.

That's one nice thing on a variable, dial it down for close shots and still have the ability to reach out when needed. And despite what you might think, a compact rifle/carbine can still be very effective at long range....

Just curious - OP what do you like to run on your compact rifles? I will be setting up a youth gun soon!

I run a few different scopes on my compact rifles. On my Model Sevens I have a Leupold 1-4×20 on one and a Burris 2-8×35 on the other. My Ruger compact has a Leupold 2.5-8×36 on it. I have a Model Seven at the gunsmiths right now getting rebarreled to .338 Fed., it will probably get a Burris also. I'd love to find a Leupold 3-9×33 compact matte scope. I had one and sold it on a rifle. Wish I would have kept the scope.

Just as funny are “light” “mountain rifles” that are 9+ pounds scoped up. “Carbon fiber” 2 lb stocks have something wrong with them at that weight. 2 lb scopes on 1-1/2 MOA rifles.

I kinda over-scoped my .308 Win rifle. it's a 3-15x50mm Burris Veracity. BUT... this was done with a particular location in mind, where there's a possibility of a longer uphill shot (Desert Hills on the backside of D11 in SoCal), AND... it's FFP Reticle, so the reticle grows proportionately when turning up magnification.

But, after some trips into D14 San Bernadino to the top of this one ridge, we got a Howa UltraLite in 6.5cm for my son. Daddy's seeing the need to acquire one for himself. This became very apparent that it'd be a great idea when literally climbing up the face of a mountain from 6600 up to 8900 thru a sea of buckthorn. Those "Hubbles" weigh on ya something fierce in such a climbing situation.
