Back Country Fishing Gear

When I lived in CO I would bring a travel spinning rod, dry and nymph flies, and casting bubbles in my pack when I went out dirt biking. With the bubble you can do a lot! I find if the fish are on in the alpine creek and lakes you will get something even without a perfect setup or presentation. Bring a can of sardines, then at least you can have a fish dinner.

For smaller lakes (and usually smaller trout) I prefer using Tenkara rod—crazy light, with flies & extra line— just a few ounces and packs extremely small.

For larger lakes (and usually larger trout) I’ll pack a very light four piece spinning rod and tiny reel with 2 or 4 lbs. I used to use small spinners exclusively, but a buddy got me using small spoons a couple of years ago. They cast farther and they seem more effective. Small Kastmasters or Cyclones being the top choices.

The spinning outfit w/ rod/reel/lures/hard case is right at a pound.
