Last year I saw the biggest bucks rutting at the end of January. This will be my first year as a resident and I plan on hunting every day of the season. One other thing worth mentioning, if you don't fill your tag in January you can hunt the August season and then again in December on the same tag Ed F

I'll echo what Slim Jim said, Mid-Dec to Mid-January but add that in the northern areas I've hunted the rut activity seems highly weather dependent. Ideal is cool-cold but NOT stormy/snowy.

Am I mistaken when I say a tag is good for a whole year regardless of when you buy it? i.e. I bought my tag January 16ish of 2016 so the deer tag portion would still be good until january 15th of 2017?

No that's not how it works. You have to buy another for the next calendar year

I can't make it in January so my options are not go or the second week in December. Thinking I might be wasting my time going that early, so I'm still undecided. Hey 5milesback wanna roll to Arizona in two weeks?

realunlucky, thank you. I called AZ game and fish and it sounds like the hunting license you buy is good for 365 days but the deer tag is good for the calender year. Although I am sure you knew that.

I'm planning on going down for my first time this year.

I just moved to Montana this year and it has been an amazing year. I'm going to try to cap it off going down to AZ for the last season archery deer hunt. I'm planning on a week to 10 days just after the first of the year. It may end up being a solo hunt. Most of my friends have tapped their vacation. Just beginning my research now. It's a little drive from here, but it's better than not hunting. I kinda was wondering about the drive from Missoula in January down there if anyone has any opinion or advice on that.

This is my first year hunting OTC archery Az deer. It's about a 6-7 hour drive for me.. I hunted early sept for 3 days and saw a few does and a mt lion, but that was it. No bucks... The monsoons were pretty crazy though.
I'm headed back out 12/16- 12/19. I'm most likely going back in January, just need a new tag if I don't seal the deal in a few weeks...
I also did an archery javelina hunt last Febuary too, dang that was a blast and I got a dandy boar opening morning. I was surprised how tasty they actually are.. I put in for that hunt again so hopefully I'll be go back over for that as well..
Good luck everyone.. I'll be up in 18b if anyone wants some company.

I'll be spending some time in 18b, it's just over the hill from me. I'm scouting 2-3 days a week right now. Looking forward to this... Ed F

This will be my 35th January. It's a blast. I usually manage to get out just about every day, mid December through the end of January. I blew it on a great buck this past January, but made up for it in September. Be safe, have fun and good luck guys!

Think a buddy and I might do this hunt. He's not sure if he'll get a tag or not. My question is is does he need a hunting license even though he won't be carrying a bow or is he good to just come tag along? Thanks for any info!

Are you asking if he needs a hunting license even though he won't be hunting? No, you don't need a hunting license if your not hunting. He won't need a drivers license either if he rides with you :p
