So far I haven't been able to decipher much info on this hunt from the Arizona game regs. Looks like I need to contact them with a phone call.

Next month will be my fourth such hunt in the northern part of the state. Archery only, otc. Tough but very rewarding hunt.

I think the purchasing of the tag will be easy, I just want to confirm dates and locations. I want to hunt the northern side of the state. Not looking for anything specific, just a general area to go to and hunt. Are the tags specific buck/doe or either sex?

Page 40 of the regulations spells it all out as far as what units and the season dates are nonpermit units, meaning OTC.

Most of the true 'northern' units (north of the grand canyon) are NOT open to OTC archery deer hunting in Dec/Jan (12 & 13). Those north of the Mogollon Rim that are also NOT open during the Dec/Jan OTC archery hunt are units 1, 2, 3, 4 (except 4A), 5, 6A, 6BN, & 7. Generally, most of the desert units are all open at some point in December and January. Just pick a unit you're interested in and look up and see when or if it's open for the Dec/Jan archery hunt. Some decent deer hunting in the rut in the desert units.

Thank you. To be honest I have seen much bigger deer here. But they are not typically easy.

I checked out page 40, pretty simple. Now I just need to dial in a gmu and get to doing some research.

I have gone 3 out 5 years. We go around 7th or so of January. First couple times found some really nice bucks but couldn't close the deal. Last year we saw over 80 doe and a couple forkie in 2 days of hunting. We come from Texas and have gone to the same unit. Prob try new area next time. We get into some real bad weather that time of year. We either get it coming or going.

If I am reading correctly, a lot of these units are OTC for non residents during early season as well? August 19-September 8th?

Yeah, as far as I know all the nonpermit units on page 40 are OTC for all seasons.

For those of you that hunt AZ when have you seen the best rutting activity?

The northern part of the state usually starts about the middle of December and the southern in January

Would you say the bucks in the northern OTC units are still active in early Jan? I am thinking of hunting down there but want to wait until Jan so I can get a 2017 tag and hunt in the fall too if I don't get one in Jan.
