At 36 it happened.....

After being forced to read books I had no interests in and make reports over them in school...I have been turned off from reading, except the occasional magazine.
Turned 36 the other day and decided to try it again.
I am now on the 3rd book in the Joe Pickett series and LOVING IT!!!
Just wanted to share my experience and reiterate that even though I'm from KY, I can read lol.

Reading a book for enjoyment is much different than writing reports or being tested on the themes, protagonist, antagonist, or other deeper meanings. Its a great way to immerse yourself in a story and really get into the weeds on details you dont get from other forms of entertainment. My favorites are the Robicheaux/Purcell series, Jack Reacher series, and any Louis LaMoir type novels. For a solid D student its surprising how much I have read since the age of 35.

I only enjoy reading when it's about the outdoors, but there's a fine line between enjoyable and very dry historical or basically a research paper.
I felt it was worth rereading the books they forced in school too.

I like to take books out hunting or when I am on a beach vacation.

But when I go walking or "rucking" alone or hiking I am always listening to audio books. Usually knock out 1 or 2 books a week in audio form.

I like the Joe Picket books but also if it is based in small towns in the west I will listen to it whether a thriller, or horror, or other genres if it is based west of the Rockies I generally will listen.

I definitely go the audio book route! Never hated reading but wasn't in love with it either. Now I will listen to 50-60 books a year and I typically listen to books that are 500 to 600 pages in print with the occasional 800-1000 pager, I can listen way faster than I can read and still retain the info all the same!

That's the trick right there, OP - finding stories related to things you love or have an interest in. More than one guy went into the military or defense industry from the sparks lit while reading Tom Clancy novels.

I'd recommend Patrick McManus as well. Lots of short stories, perfect for just before bed.

As a non fan of fiction books, Capstick’s books were all fun to read. If anyone just discovers them, when you’re done watch Out of Africa and many things in the movie will resonate with you.

Most of my reading is with audio books while I'm working or putzing around. I avg about 2 a week.

Audible through Amazon has everything- a great program. You can go to the local library and they will set you up with the Libby APP, it's the free public library system audio book program- awesome.

Try the author Vince Flynn and start his series from the beginning, "Transfer of Power" the Mitch Rapp series.

If you like the western stuff check the author, Tony Hillerman, he has a series with an Indian sheriff Joe Leaphorn that can track a deer over smooth granite.

Then there is the more recent author Mark Greany, starting with "The Gray Man", if that doesn't hold your interest, nothing will
