So first & foremost, I just entered the bow arena therefore, I’m in the learning phase.

I recently bought a 2017 Carbon Hoyt Defiant that came decked out minus arrows. After speaking with the previous owner who had the bows dl set at a 29” which is mine as well he recommended Gold Tip Pro Hunters 340 cut at 30”.

Which puts 1” of arrow extending beyond my QAD rest.

With that being said, does anybody with more experience than me recommend anything different?

I like to have my arrows an inch or so in front of my riser for just a little piece of mind that the broadheads aren’t sitting directly over or behind my hand at full draw. You arrow length also may not perfectly correlate to your draw, I think my arrows are actually about a 1/2 inch shorter than my draw length

@madkaw284 70 lbs. Also I’ll disclose I’m shooting left handed. Archery is secondary over rifle so simply put Im not too die hard.

Really doing it because I’m stationed in Texas and Texas isnt a centerfire friendly state compared to bow.

If you’re shooting 70# at a 29” draw you should at minimum be at a 300 spine. You can usually get away with close to 1.5” of arrow length (sometimes more sometimes less) off of your draw length. So in your case roughly around 27.5” shaft, 30” would possibly be difficult to tune depending on insert and point weight. There’s too many variables involved to give you an exact answer online.

You should go to an archery shop to let them confirm your draw length, tune your bow, and appropriately cut your arrows. This is based on your being a beginner and infrequent archer.

I’m not overly familiar with Hoyts, but with a 29” draw length, I’d say about a 29.5” arrow will put your arrow right at the front edge of your shelf. This is traditionally the safest place (or longer arrow) for a broadhead, particularly for a beginner. I’ve shot Gold Tip Hunters for about 4-5 years. They’re a good arrow. You’re better off with at least the .300 spine. I shoot a 63 lbs, 29” draw and my .340s are borderline with 100 grain head and standard insert. Add a few lbs. and the arrow weakens a little too much for good flight consistency.

I hunt in Texas too. Although I don’t hunt with a rifle, Texas has a very generous rifle season. I’m not sure why you say Texas isn’t friendly to centerfire rifles? I actually wish they didn’t overlap so much with archery. But that’s another thread.

Good luck!

Thank you for the advice @Planopurist

My statement regarding Texas revolves around the Texas Parks & Wildlife having several WMAs and PHL that’s bow or crossbow only. Some shotgun. I realize Davy Crockett NF and SHNF are open range however, places like Granger PHL it’s bow or crossbow only. Since I used Granger if you and I wanted to go hunt hogs Saturday it’s bow only. There’s a few others that I’ve ran into that have their own little nuisances like that.

US Army Corp of Engineers same spiel.

Ranchers are hit and miss.

Gotcha! You mean for public land!! Yes, that’s different. You can also put in for sever TPWD “draw hunts”.

Best advice I can give you is get rid of that cam if it is a number 2 cam. At your draw unfortunately that is probably what your dealing with. The 2.1 cam is the corrected version of that one.
