I love my atom LT hoody. The atom AR is warmer. The LT is better for more activity.

I like arcteryx because their stuff isn't cut for someone who is 9 months pregnant. And it is high quality.

thanks for all the replys im going to do the atom lt hoody and R1 fleece for underneath my Sitka Jetstream, i also have sitka dewpoint rain jacket but its cut wide wish it was more of a slim fit! i live in arizona but hunt in higher elevations when i draw tags so i dont need crazy gear but love having what works

If its fleece, I think Patagonia's R1 is better choice but with that said, Arcteryx is awesome gear.

Atom LT Hoody is the bomb. Wish the color choices were better but such a great jacket. I do not think that they make any bad gear.

It took me forever to find a brown one.

Arcteryx is great, and I agree with several posters that the Atom vest and jacket are about the best thing ever.

But, even though I'm a huge Sitka fan, here's what I normally tell people: buy 1-2 sitka base layer tops & 1-2 Traverse tops for layering and to work with whatever outer layer you like. Don't worry about camo bottoms for mid or base layers, because you're just going to cover them with pants. As far as cold weather, you can get usually primaloft jackets in Cabela's online bargain cave for about $50. For primaloft pants, go to ll bean for their ,primaloft long John's for $99; there are other options, as well.

You don't have to spend arcteryx or sitka type money for everything in your kit. And, if you do, keep an eye on the Rokslide classifieds, STP, ebay, and sales at your favorite gear store.

If you're not LEAF qualified, you can still purchase most of the items through various online retailers.

It is but not much. . . My LEAF gear runs ever so slightly larger than my standard Arcteryx gear.

the R1 is a pretty darn good midlayer- decent amount of warmth with good moisture moving ability; the hood adds so little extra weight I think it's a no brainer, but I like hoods

Patagonia, like Arcteryx, makes a lot of nice pieces- if you shop around (and often combined with waiting) you can find their stuff significantly cheaper than msrp- also ebay for lightly used stuff

Well - I feel like I'm cheating on an old girl friend but I couldn't resist a sale offer to try the Patagonia R1. I got a hoodless one for $83.00 in Ash Tan and plan on using it for some back country skiing this weekend. It's lighter than my Arcteryx Delta AR but I feel like it may be just as warm. I got the XL and it seems to have a slimmer fit than most of my XL fleeces and certainly more snug than my Delta AR in the lower torso and sleeves. I think this will be an excellent mid layer, or extra mid layer under my shells. I could see me wearing this along with my Delta AR or a Puffy on extreme weather days.

Thanks everyone who suggested it! I'm pretty hard on gear and brutally honest if it doesn't work out but based on what I see I don't think anyone steered me wrong - Guess I better send the good people at Arcteryx some flowers. . .

If the hunting world would design their jackets to have the same hoods as Arcteryx, things would be great.

Yeah, hoods for helmet designs. They just seem to allow so much better mobility of the head and also the coverage around the sides of the face are a lot better. Most other hunting jackets leave a gap around the edge of the face that really lets wind blow in.

The Sportsman's Guide has new USMC gridded fleece pullovers. I have both the Patagonia R1 and the USMC fleece. I can get 3 USMC to 1 Patagonia they come in coyote and are the same Polartec material.

They are also designed for full articulation meaning when you turn your head the hood turns with you. It is a great design.
