All these tarps for rain and rain gear and such got me curious if anybody just carries a lightweight umbrella and if so how useful you found it. Seems really quick and easy to deploy and put away and lighter than rain gear, could sit and glass under it for shade as well. Thought about it just now when I grabbed one to go feed the quail and collect eggs so I weight it, regular nothing special umbrella it's 7oz.

I've thought about it. Local dollar store has some that are ultra-lite because they are cheapies.

It works until there is wind. I used to laugh when my dad would carry one but now I carry one from time to time. It boils down to how I plan to hunt.

Yes. I only switch to a jacket when below 40° or expecting constant all day rain.

Screaming Potato did you ever try this out? Curious to hear your experience.... Was interested in trying for desert sun protection as tying off a tarp can be a hassle with no trees around. Did you find any that worked or was a bust?

I did buy a tiny little camo umbrella from Amazon, need to go grab it and weight it. Sure would be easier to deploy and put away but requires hands or some creativity. I suppose if I'm glassing from a tripod it could be held, or maybe I could rig up a mount for the tripod... hmmm....

No. Going through brush an umbrella would get shredded. And my pants would still get wet, which would then leech down into my boots. So, that kind of renders the umbrella useless for mobile applications and only usable for stationary use. And if there is wind it would be easily defeated by the wind and rain.

I just use my 8x10 tarp. Short rain bursts and it comes out and gets draped over me and my backpack like a poncho. Longer and heavier rain storms I pitch it like an A-frame and wait things out.

Edit to add: the above is specific to backcountry elk and mule deer hunting. For whitetail deer hunting, where I walk half mile or so into a treestand, yes, I have used an umbrella for that before. Pretty easy. Makes walking in much easier, since I wear my baselayer and then get dressed at the base of the tree, putting on rain gear and leaving the umbrella at the base of the tree. Two entirely different situations, though, for sure.

Different application but, one of my wives ultralight backpacking friends seems to take one on almost every trip they do. She uses it as sun shade a lot of the time. I think the backcountry umbrella it a pretty fair weather / specific use case scenario thing.

Been running an Allen Treestand Umbrella for many years. It goes in my back pack when moving but if in a stand or sitting under a tree, I break it out. Also works as a blind to sit behind it if needed.
