Well the wedding has past and the honeymoon is over, then the wife says "you going to get ready for this Elk hunt"...... one word "keeper". This coming trip has been a lifeline for me, got my mind off things and give me something to focus on, the last 9months have been an absolute rollercoaster, but having something to concentrate on, other than the wedding, has helped out no end. I've been gathering kit and info, keeping fit (Christmas bulge got carried away) and being out of work didn't help, but that's getting sorted by Shaun-T Insanity and Running. What are you guys doing in your build up to September?

No, i'm not. Once we get rid of the snow and I can get up to the hunting areas I might. Still pretty early. All I want to do now is fly fish the high mountain creeks. If it would just stop snowing. Where's spring?

Waiting for this to stop. Still 5 to 6 ft and snowing twice a week. Might need snowshoes for archery this year.

Yep. When I started putting in for tags this year (our deadline isn't till May 18th) it got my mind on it and it hasn't left since. Got some work to do on the pop up camper I rebuilt last year before the season and I just put all new canvas on it last weekend. Going to pick up a new axle for it and get it raised up a few more inches as well so my approach and departure angles are better getting it off the beaten path too. Can't wait for the weather to calm a bit up there so I can get some trips in.

At 45 years old I bought my first elk tag for a Colorado OTC archery hunt. Going back this year and I think about it every day. Seems like I spent a small fortune last year on gear. This year it seems I'm still having to spend a lot of money just trying to get my kit right (some of the stuff I got last year didn't work for me). I doing all the research and making backup plans and working out and running, just cant seem to capture my diet!! I've spent countless vacations in the Creede area to fly fish, hike, and ski and now I'm addicted to Elk!

All of this snow in Co and Northern NM !! Chama has forecast of snow this weekend. Come hunting season, it will probably be hot and dry, and I will be praying for snow while hunting in t-shirt, shorts, and tennis shoes.
I leave 24 weeks from today for the 2nd OTC Bull hunt in Co Unit 78, and can't think about anything else.

Just being more active. Hiking trails near home. Treadmill with my pack on. Lots of mapping research. Spent a small fortune on gear upgrades & repairs. Spending too much time on Rokslide :)

I retire after 20 years in August, retirement gift was a Montana combo tag, Arizona couse tag, and if a draw a Wyoming bison tag along with my resident Colorado tags. Excited is an understatement!!

The day I knew which state I was hunting I went and booked flights for a scouting trip. Very excited. I've already started laying out gear and packing/unpacking. By September my wife will welcome by departure.

I am ready for summer to start about every Oct 1st. I like summer as much as I like elk hunting, so right now I'm ready for summer........and then elk hunting.

But for now, still have to deal with this:

I didn't get my boat out this spring because I wanted to concentrate all of my time on hunting related things. I am now regretting that choice. All of this snow has really set everything back.

It's hard to get too excited in Colorado. We don't know what tags we're getting yet. I'm pretty sure i'll get all mine, but you never know.

I threw 14 points at a rifle deer tag that I know I'll get, and I'm not really even remotely excited about that. But then again, deer have always been an afterthought for me behind elk. Now if I knew I was going to be drawing a 14 point archery elk tag, I'd be all kinds of excited and ready to go.

I'm the same way. I hunt for deer and enjoy it, but if it was the only hunting I had, i'm not sure i'd still be hunting at my age. It's elk and bear hunting that get my juices flowing.

Man I was ready for september on OCT 1 this last year. Unfortunately I was workng so much (self employed) trying to get a heap pump and furnace paid for before winter that I was unable to hunt regular season. My choice and lack of planning, but that wont happen again, EV-ER!

Yeah that snow sucks Guys, but just gives you more time to plan and Google earth the area :)

I booked the tickets for my flight as soon as the tickets became available last year, I've bought almost everything I need(more KUIU gear) inc Teton waterproof jkt, Gaiters, Peleton hoody and t-shirt and a good friend sold me his Icon 5200, so he could upgrade to the pro 5200.
I'm so ready for this trip after my 2014 close call with a 7x7, I'm working on my fitness and expanding my lungs (at nearly 45yrs old, it feels harder than ever to get rid of that love handle), ready for the long hike up them 11-12'000ft mountains. I can't wait to hear a bugle, a squirrel chipping out his warning, even a Pika harrassing me while I glass a gully from a boulder field, I just love being out there, but this year I will hunt harder than I ever have....... Its a long way from UK to do things half arsed, bring on the Elk!
