I put in for the draw for antelope here in AZ. If I pull a tag, I might want to use a rifle I have not hunted with before. I will probably want to rescope it and I could use some advice on which scope to buy. Maybe up to $2K but I would happily go lower and could be convinced to go higher.

Ruger No. 1 in .257 Weatherby with a 28” barrel.

I have no points. Does that mean I am effectively out of luck?
Regarding 3x9x40 -- that power and size has always been my favorite but I think this particular rifle deserves something more.

With zero points you will only be in the 1-2 Pass portion of the draw, which is where most people are anyway since the Bonus Pass tags take dbl digit points. Get the lowest random number, you could still draw.

If you draw a tag with zero points I'm finding a bridge to jump off of

Prefer not to dial. I am an old guy and I still use MOA and hold over.
If you aren't dialing, it's safe to assume you will not be shooting past 500. If you are staying inside of 500 yards, 4x12 would really be the top end of magnification that would be useful. There are many options that would work great for under $1,000 imo.

Here is an option if you really want some magnification though - https://www.eurooptic.com/trijicon-...n-led-dot-mrad-ranging-30mm-matte-black-rifle

I have one and it has been a good scope for what I use it for.

If your not dialing and prefer hold offs I would get one of the below depending on your budget. Swaro’s weakness in their scopes has always been their dials, but their glasses obviously fantastic.

The Leica is honestly my favorite scope I own to date. If you can get along with the reticle in this one it can be had for under 1k. It was to busy for me, so sold it and bought another with a simpler reticle.

Buddy had an SHV, it’s nice as well.

The Maven is really well built, I’ve got the rs1.2 which has the turrets and been very happy with it as well.

Those can all be had for “about” 1k, and they all would be sufficient in my mind for your use. Obviously budget would open up or reduce options depending.

I pulled the Weatherby out of the very back of the safe and see, to my surprise, that it is already scoped with a Burris Veracity 3x15x50 FFP optic. I had not laid hands on that rifle in a long time. I will shoot it a bit with what it has on it now and see what I think before I further consider rescoping it. I live on a ranch in Central AZ and can shoot paper at 100 yards and steel out to 500 yards from my patio after I finish my morning coffee so I am blessed in that regard.

By coincidence, and for an entirely different purpose, I just bought a Trijicon scope a couple of days ago. It is an Accupoint 3x9x42 with the post/green triangle reticule. It is going on my .556 Bren 2. I think that will work out well.

I used to use a 257WBY for pronghorn, mine had a 4-14 leupold which was great for the times but not so much anymore. Get a trijicon of some sort that meets your needs/wants.
I would say the same thing
Trijicon
I was shooting my buddies ruger #1 243 win , with a trijicon on top and constantly hitting milk jugs out to 400 meters, the lenses are fantastic in low light conditions

I shot my first few antelope with my .30-06 and .308 Win with 3-9x40 scopes. In 1977 I built my .257 Ackley specifically for deer and antelope and put a 6x Leupold on it. That combination worked well for me for about 3 dozen more Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana antelope and 3 bighorn rams and a Dall ram. All were shot at less than 300 yards.

I recently replaced that 6x scope with a 4.5-14x40 Leupold scope with their B&C reticle.

Yeah the good old days , before everyone started thinking they a sniper’s
Now days these asshole start slinging lead @ 6-800 meters instead of hunting

I have a Trijicon Accupoint 3x9x40 with the duplex reticle on my 16 inch .556 AR and I like it a lot. I just ordered a Trijicon AccuPoint 2.5-12.5x42 MOA-Dot Crosshair w/ Green Dot off Scopelist too. Not sure which rifle I will use it on but I have a lot of choices here at the ranch. I chose MOA because I am an old guy.
