Ammo choice for 12ga upland hunting

For grouse or partridge, it’s hard to beat a load of straight 7’s. Can’t buy them that I’m aware of, so you will have to reload them.

I reload my own shells. 1-1/8 oz. #6 & 7.5 lead shot with Alliant green dot powder.

1 3/8 oz #5's and 1 5/8 oz #4's high velocity copper plated where I can use lead.

Wild pheasants - 1 1/4 of 6's at 1330 is ideal...brand doesn't matter too much, although Kent seems to be a great value. Most guys don't have the skill set to be shooting beyond 40 yards at pheasants, but this will kill out past 50.

Grouse - 1 1/8 of 7.5's. Grouse are easy to kill...just about any load will work.

I noticed a difference this week - birds were getting up far out, and when I switched to 3 inch #5 from 2 & 3/4 #5...many more roosters and sharpies seemed to fall out of the sky. However that's way too much shell in the early season.
