All things .308 Win

has anyone used 308 on black bear by chance?
Certainly have, and many more recovered and helped skin working with a local outfitter. It was always a relief when a client pulled out a familiar .308 or similar deer rifle instead of a shiny new magnum or worse a .45-70. Your favorite deer load will get the job done.

Tikka Roughtek in a KRG Echo with a SilencerCo Harverster Evo
165 Tipped Game King over 43.5 gr 8208. 2760 FPS.
Loaded 10 to test. Put 8 on paper and bange a piece of steel I have out at 500 with the last two.
One was a little harder to seat and had stiff bolt lift…

Is this the roughtech ranch 16 inch?

Hey everyone. Debating my first big game cartridge/rifle. Have been looking at Tikka T3x Lite in 308 or 6.5 CM.
I am in CA and non lead ammo is required.
Does anyone have an experience with blued Tikka T3x in 308 shooting copper bullets. My concern is 1:11 barrel twist being possibly too slow to stabilize longer copper bullets. The intended purpose would be to hunt desert mule deer in open country with shots out to 200-400’. The stainless steel version is 1:10 but I like the heavier discount on Euro Optic on the blued ones.
Thanks!

Ive heard the 130gr barnes get good velocity out of a 308. Either twist rate should work for those. My 308 is 1 in 12, i tried 1-165gr copper load and it did not like them. I didn't try any others due to finding something else it liked. Other non lead users have spoken highly of DRT, and Hammer bullets. If I had to shoot copper I would give those a try also.

Mine loves the ttsx 130 and is a 1:11. About 3100 keeps you above expansion velocity for those ranges.

Curious if you have had the chance to shoot some of this and how it performed?
This 16" factory barrel and this ammo get along fine but not great. Groups meet my standard (always under 1.5" for 10 shot strings) but I haven't had any fall under 1.2" yet as they frequently do with my 6.5 gamer gun or .223.

Sounds good thank you for the reply, been doing some looking around wanting to pick up something bulk to have around.

You buy this ammo for the lot to lot consistency and devastating terminal effects. You’ll like it or any of us would buy it off you.

If I could achieve similar results in my setup you’ve experienced, that would be just fine. Currently on the hunt for some available.

For those hunting with .308 Win match bullets like the ELDMs and TMKs — are these bullets leaving massive holes, or does the relatively low speeds limit the damage? I’ve seen some gnarly pics on this site where is looks like a deer got hit with a cannon, and I think some of those were coming from .30 cals, but I also see people recommending the 168 ELDM as a good killing bullet with no reservations.

FNG who just saw this older thread.

I'm fond of .308 and my most accurate rifle is a long, heavy tack driver - a Rem 700P in .308.

Also quite happy with the 16" SFAR in .308. Hmm, the gen 1 Ruger American in .308 may need to be upgraded to a rifle with threads for a suppressor...

Varget has worked very well for both Sierra MKs/GKs and Barnes bullets in our three .308s, not so much for Nosler partitions.
I ended up with one of those tikka roughtechs 16 inch. It is not really much of a difference in signature than the longer barrel 308 I have when suppressed. It sure does shoot nice. Did a short break in and then got some good groups with smk and tmk. Makes me happy. Short, light and shoots nice.

They can if they hit bone on the way out.
