I know this is a super long shot and probably shouldnt even ask, but im going to anyway as im not getting any younger. Is there any Alaska guides out there that would offer a sheep hunt in trade for any electrial work that needs to be done for free? Im a licensed journeyman electrician out of South Dakota. Im sure i am going to get made fun of, but im trying to think outside the box on how i can pull off a dall sheep hunt in my lifetime. Thats my #1 bucket list hunt before i kick the can. Thanks everyone!

What you’re asking to do is illegal unless you have an Alaska Administrator license. Even if it wasn’t you are SOL as there are a lot of guides that are tradesmen in the offseason.

Your best bet is to start your own company, make a bunch of money and buy all the sheep hunts you desire. Not sure the work situation in SD but there is a shortage of most tradesmen across the country.

Purely curious here but...

What is specifically illegal about an arrangement like the one the OP proposed?
All electrical work in the SOA must be done under an Electrical Administrator. There are a few exceptions but none that allow compensation.

He’s going to do 40k of electrical work in AK? As a filthy non resident? Yeah someone will make a call. It will take him 3 weeks to 4 weeks to do 40k worth of work. Could make enough for a couple sheep hunts and then some if he’s worth his salt legally and not be trying to backdoor legit businesses 🤣

Go for it. Don’t delay! You will enjoy every minute of an Alaska Dall sheep hunt. Also, take some time and review the numerous threads and posts about recent trends in North American bighorn sheep hunts. Tags aren’t getting any easier to attain.

Realistically, you are probably looking at a $70,000 dall sheep hunt in the near future (+|- 3 years). Good outfitters were already quoting hunts for $50,000+ base (excluding numerous expenses) at the recent conventions.

Good luck with your decisions and planning. See you on the mountain and happy hunting to all, TheGrayRider a/k/a Tom.

Ya i know, thats why i said " i probably shouldnt ask, but i will anyway". I dont see a big deal in it, knowing how many hacks are out there doing shotty electrical work, plus many homeowners and handymen flying under the radar doing it. Why worry about an actual licensed electrician doing alittle work in trade for a hunt. Theres alot worse shit going on in this country than a little "illegal" electrical work.

I’m not worried about it at all. But it sounds like a hell of a deal.

Give you a sheep. Pose the risk of having an unlicensed, not insured, no bonding guy from SD work on one’s property or business? Can’t write it off for the business because it’s side work. So you’re going to charge a reduced rate. Correct? What are you going to charge? How much does it cost if you get hurt on the job?

The thing is you don’t want a sheep bad enough. There is insane amount of work out there, WORK for it.

Don’t try to do something illegal or cut corners. You don’t have to.

Oh trust me, i work my ass off every single day. Do you have kids? I assume not. Since you think its so easy to save for a hunt like that. Good day.

there are quite a few guides who dont live in ak right? Maybe there is a dude guiding up here who lives in SD and needs some stuff done. the electrical work wouldnt have to be in alaska. if this dude makes it up here, id have him check out the dumb trim tabs on my boat have a beer be friends and then go out fishing. i hate electrical stuff.

Most sheep hunters are gay with no kids. I’m an exception to the rule tho.

Never said it was easy, if it was everyone would do it. But no better time than the present. There is a legitimate man power shortage out there. Makes it ripe to start your own company even if you’re just a one man show. Use your skills, take a leap of faith and get it done. If you really want it stop making excuses. It’s not fair to your kids to use them as an excuse.

Dreamers dream doers do! Dreamers can give you a 1001 reasons why it didn't work out. The responsibility is not theirs, it's always someone or something else.

Good luck!

Know a dude who was trying to throw a check close to the average US annual income at an outfitter, still couldn't get a spot. Reality is nonresident sheep hunting is pretty much dead for anyone who isn't an oil baron.

Even if you picked your life up and moved to AK specifically to sheep hunt, there's a decent chance you'd never get to harvest one with the way populations trends are right now.

Got to hunt sheep. Found sheep but no legal shooters. Great experience. Got to scratch the itch.

Don't worry dude. I'll be up there full time by 27, by which point there will be half as many legal rams as when you hunted 😅

I moved my family up to Alaska for the dream to hunt sheep…

But @OXN939 hit the nail on the head. After two years and putting on a couple hundred miles I never found a legal ram.
Should have just hit the easy button and flown in.

I've offered to build my dad a house in Alaska to retire, solely for the purpose of being able to hunt sheep...

I’ll carry him on my back or pull him around in a rickshaw if needed to utilize his “second degree of kindred” status…
I have a rental that would be available next year. Nice small unit. I’ll even show you on a map where you can fly in and get a ram with your old man. 2,000/month utilities included, min 1 year lease. 3000 deposit. Available April 2026.
