Alaska caliber (338 or 30 cal)?

If I was forced to choose between a 308 or 338 caliber cartridge for bear and moose hunts in AK, I would build a 338 Sherman. A 300 mag would make no sense given I can drive a 180 grain 7mm bullet. After all, a lot of the factory 300 win mag ammo people are gonna use is around 180 grains.

As an Alaska hunting guide myself, I can say that you'll have tough time finding a guide up here who'll embrace the idea of a client bringing a .45-70. That's not to say that there's probably a couple or maybe a few who'll allow it, but they'd likely be much happier if you brought something that shoots considerably more flat.

And I'd pass on the various .300 magnums. I'd also pass on the. 338 Winchester Magnum (why physically abuse yourself with that?). Go with a .375 Holland & Holland or .375 Ruger. Fabulous trajectory - about like an .06 with 200 grain bullet - and especially when considering all that bullet weight and delivered kinetic energy.

If you want to go unique I thought about a Wildcat 35 cal on a short action would be nice and handy coupled with a short barrel. Handy for sure in the Alaska bush, but maybe not so much for long range elk.

As mentioned some other less popular but fully competent for your hunt options May be a 338-06, or a 35 whelen (I would go AI for the headspace) and the 9.3x62 still popular in Europe and Africa. Also the 325 wsm would be a good elk rifle.
