Hey Rok Klan! Spring baiting brown bear season is here again. I’m going to keep updating this thread on how each of the hunts go. If the season sucks, you’re gonna know. If we are crushing it, you’re gonna know! I have ten brown bear hunts lined up between now and first of July. Three baits are currently out with more to come as the snow recedes off runways!IMG_1391.jpegIMG_1387.jpegIMG_1395.jpegIMG_1385.jpeg

Looking forward to it! How often do you see browns and blacks at the bait site together?
Since I stopped using barrels for the bait we see it quite often. Sometimes every night sometimes a couple times a week. The interactions are fun to watch. Last year a 6’ black bear did not like one of the browns he ate with and would walk up and pound him in the head with his paw and chase him off!!IMG_9987.jpegIMG_9930.jpegIMG_9835.jpeg

Very cool. Are all your brown bear hunts baited or do you do spot and stalk also?

Not using barrels? Serious question, do you just drop the bait out of the plane as you fly over? Seems like it would be lots less wear and tear on the plane that way?

Glad to see you're doing another thread like this Jake, good luck to you and all your hunters! Let me know if you need some help taking care of those pesky black bears
Wink

Ummmm. No. I don’t need 400lbs of dog food spread over 12 square acres at 70mph!

My spring brown are all baited. Spot and stalk brown bears I do in conjunction with my moose hunts in the fall in western Ak.

I’m taking a friend out in PWS this weekend to hopefully get him his first bear and then, with luck, the ice will have melted off the lakes up north and I can get in for my grizz hunt. It’ll be the first spring bear hunt I’ll have guided and I’m super stoked.

I love this time of year.

Is there a rule on how close to a runway you can bait? Baiting for those big boys must take a lot of hauling from the plane!
These “runways” aren’t like actual runways. Sandbars. Gravel openings. Ridges. Stuff like that. I try to set them up so I can almost get the wing of the plane over the bait. I have one bait I carry food about 60 yards. That’s the farthest. Most are under 40. Ones even literally under the wing of the plane. I go thru about 250 bags of dog food in two months on four to six baits.

Lol currently ol’ Roy from Walmart at 29 bucks a bag!
Each bag gets lifted and moved 6 times before it’s consumed by a bear. I can haul about 7-9 bags at a time in the plane. Some days mid June I will fly 6-8 hours a day to keep the baits stocked and fed. A busy bait will go thru 8lbs an hour of dog food.
I have tried BB guns, slingshots and of course rocks to chase black bears off. Nothing works other than to kill them and eat them.IMG_0002.jpeg
This bait is now right under the wing. I can often spray the bears with a squirt bottle to hold them off while I dump the food.
