Crazy how variable bear behavior is. Sometimes 2 day old human scent will send them running. Other times you can't get rid of them.

Well my guy missed the one on a rushed shot as the bear turned. Then got a second chance the next night at this dark dark bear. We blood trailed it for 400 yards until it got off into the swamps.never recovered. Just goes to show. A 375 still needs to be put in the right spot.


Both guys killed great black bears as well.

How are you liking no barrel? Current running a bait up here off the Kenai peninsula, seems like it would work well, did you see an increase in consumption? Thanks!

Consumption increased dramatically. I also got more bears feeding together. So it increased my activity too.

Do you require your clients to use a minimum caliber? Curious if you’ve seen smaller calibers (.223, .243 or .270) used on big brown bears in real life. Not trying to hijack this thread, just curious.

Seen and used the 270
On browns. 308’s as well. All work great. I would use a 243 on one as well. The 223 I probably wouldn’t.
I Prefer guys show up with at least a .30
Cal. That way I don’t end up hearing about their creedmore all week.

Another brown bear down this afternoon!!
And another black bear this evening!

These two…their dads worked together. They are cousins. They started working with their dads as teenagers, together. They retired together. They live next to each other. They are moving to Florida together. Their dream after retirement was a brown bear hunt, together.
They said, Jake we don’t need no trophies, we are here for an adventure!!!
So they went on an adventure and shot two brown bears and two black bears in less than 16 hours, together.
I land to pick up the goodies and they are Lounging in the sun with grins on their faces that couldn’t stop! Their bears are not big, the hides are not great, but the mission for these two was more than fulfilled!
What a joy to hunt with guys that where there for the reasons they were. The etched floor plate, one of their fathers dreams was to hunt a brownie, he passed away before it could ever happen, the son never forgot and etched his gun to go along.

83 years old. Climbing out of the super cub on his brown bear trip “hey uh guys my knee is dislocated. Pull my foot. Ahh there we go. No worries happens all the time fellas!”

So with his cane he climbs in the blind and drops a 9’, 27” skull brown bear on his first evening watching bait in Alaska!

The baits have been sitting alone for a few days. Activity has slowed a lot, likely due to all the new moose calves on the ground this week. Very typical to see a lull in bait pressure this week. When there’s a new snack in town the bait becomes the ugly girl for a little while.
